3,091. A Partially-Demolished "Cradle"

Hilchos Kilayim 8:5

If a “cradle” gets demolished in the middle but five vines remain on one side of the fence and five vines remain on the other side opposite them, it is called “an interrupted cradle.” If there are eight and one-sixtieth cubits between them (about 12’ 3”), he need only distance six handbreadths (about 18”) between the rows before planting, so long as he doesn’t plant under a trellis as we previously discussed.

Hilchos Kilayim 8:6

If there are exactly eight cubits between them, one may not bring seeds there. If he planted there (even though he shouldn’t have), since he distanced six handbreadths, what grows isn’t consecrated. If there’s no fence left, then he need distance only six handbreadths from each row to plant. This is because there’s no “cradle,” not even “an interrupted cradle.” If he rebuilt the fence, then the “cradle” or the “interrupted cradled” is restored.
