3,080. A Vineyard That Was Destroyed
Hilchos Kilayim 7:8
Regarding a vineyard that was destroyed, if (a) there are ten reapable vines in an area suitable to plant a seah of grain (about 75’x75’) and (b) the vines are planted two sets of two opposite one another with one extending like a tail, or if it can be seen as three opposite three, then it’s called a poor vineyard and one may not plant seed anywhere in it.
Hilchos Kilayim 7:9
Let’s say that a vineyard wasn’t planted in rows, but haphazardly. If the vines can be seen as having been planted two opposite three, it’s considered a vineyard; if not, then it’s not considered a vineyard and it’s sufficient to distance just six handbreadths (about 18”) from each vine before planting seed.
