3,077. How Many Vines Make a Row?

Hilchos Kilayim 7:2

A row must have three or more vines; this is the case when there are from four to eight cubits (6’-12’) between the vines. However, if there are eight cubits between the two rows not including the space occupied by the vines, then they’re considered separate from one another, and not a single vineyard that would require distancing more than six handbreadths (18”) from each row. Similarly, if there’s less than four cubits between the rows, they are treated as a single vine and one need only distance six handbreadths in each direction.

Hilchos Kilayim 7:3

If there are three rows of vines, they are considered a vineyard even if there are fewer than four cubits between them. This is because we treat the middle row as if it’s not there. Similarly, if there are three rows with eight cubits or more between the rows, one may plant between the rows.
