3,070. The Airspace of a Vineyard

Hilchos Kilayim 6:4

A small vine shorter than a handbreadth in length (about 3”) doesn’t render consecrated what was planted. This is only the case when two vines were planted opposite two vines and another extends like a tail. However, if a whole vineyard is planted like this, then it is rendered consecrated.

Hilchos Kilayim 6:5

Let’s say that there are two gardens, one above the other, and the lower one is a vineyard. One may plant the upper garden until he reaches the airspace within ten handbreadths (about 30”) of the vineyard. This is because it’s prohibited to plant seeds within ten handbreadths of the airspace of a vineyard or a vine. If the upper garden is a vineyard, one may plant the lower garden until he reaches within three handbreadths (about 9”) of the vines’ roots.
