911. Shabbos Shuva, Kiddush Levana
130:5 On Shabbos Shuvah (i.e., the Shabbos before Yom Kippur), a prestigious person should be called to the Torah for maftir. (At the very least, we do not have a minor read the haftarah of Shabbos Shuvah - Mishnah Brurah 602:11.)
130:6 Some have the practice not to sanctify the moon until the night after Yom Kippur. This is because then we are happy, rather than nervous as we were before Yom Kippur. Others say that it is preferable to sanctify the moon before Yom Kippur so that we can have this additional mitzvah in our merit. Every community should act according to its own practice. In a place where it is possible to buy esrogim, lulavim and hadassim (three of the species used on Succos) early, scrupulous people are accustomed to acquire these things during the Ten Days of Repentance in order to add this mitzvah to their merits.
