3,068. The Radius of Sanctification

Hilchos Kilayim 5:24

Let’s say that someone planted an onion in a vineyard. The vineyard was subsequently uprooted and onions grew from the roots that had been planted. Even if the growth outsizes the roots by a factor of 200, the roots remain prohibited. This is because permitted growth doesn’t affect the status of prohibited roots.

Hilchos Kilayim 6:1

If a person plants vegetables or grain in a vineyard or allows such species to remain and increase by 1/200th, he causes the vines around it to become sanctified for 16 cubits in every direction. This happens in a circle, rather than a square. This circle – whose diameter is 32 cubits – is considered as if it were entirely filled with vegetables. Any vine that grows in this circle is sanctified along with the vegetables; vines outside the circle are not sanctified.
