3,052. Vegetables Normally Only Planted a Few at a Time

Hilchos Kilayim 4:8

The difference between meishar (a strip, in halacha 6) and karachas (a box, in halacha 7) is that a meishar is long and a karachas is square.

Hilchos Kilayim 4:9

Let us discuss species of vegetables normally only planted a few at a time, as mentioned in halacha 1:9. It is permitted to plant even five these species in a row six handbreadths by six handbreadths (about 18”x18”) so long as one plants four species on the four sides of the row and the fifth species in the middle; he must leave 1.5 handbreadths (about 4.5”) between the species so that they don’t nourish one another. One may not plant more than five species in a row even if he separates more between them because it would look as if they were planted as mixed species.
