3,050. Planting in a Ditch or a Pit

Hilchos Kilayim 4:4

If a ditch or a water channel is a handbreadth deep (about 3”), one may plant three different species in it: one on each edge and one in the middle.

Hilchos Kilayim 4:5

It is permitted to plant two different species in the same pit – even cucumbers and gourds, whose leaves grow long and tangle with other plants – so long as one of them reaches over one side of the pit and the other reaches over the other side so that they are visibly distinct from one another. The same is true if one plants four species in a pit and directs the growth in four different directions.
