3,035. A Detrimental Species

Hilchos Kilayim 2:9

Pursuant to the previous halacha, if osteospermum grew among grain or herbs grew among fenugreek that was planted as food for people, it was obviously not done intentionally, as these are detrimental to the main crop. The same is true in all comparable cases.

Hilchos Kilayim 2:10

You might ask how people are supposed to know that the fenugreek was planted as food for people. Such is the case when it has been planted in rows with a border around it. Similarly, if many species grew in the place of a grain heap, one need not uproot them because it’s obvious that one doesn’t want plants to grow in the place of his grain heap. If he removes some of the sprouts, he is told to uproot everything except for one species. This is because his actions suggest that he wants to retain the ones that remain.
