3,031. Two Types of Seed That Got Mixed

Hilchos Kilayim 2:1

Let’s say that two different types of seed got mixed together. If the seed of a smaller volume is 1/24 of the total (or more), such as a seah of wheat mixed with 23 seah of barley, then it is prohibited to plant these seeds unless one reduces the volume of wheat or increases the volume of barley. If one planted the mixture without doing so, he is liable to the penalty of lashes.

Hilchos Kilayim 2:2

Any type of seed that is prohibited vis-à-vis the seeds in the mixture count towards the 1/24. For example, if 23 seah of wheat were mixed with two kav of barley,* two kav of lentils and two kav of beans, one may not plant the mixture until he reduces the prohibited seah by removing some of it or adding to the wheat. This is because barley, lentils and beans are all considered mixed species with wheat.

*Note: a seah (about 2.25 gallons) is six kav.
