3,027. To What Does Kilayim Apply?

Hilchos Kilayim 1:2

Kilayim (mixed species) applies to planting, weeding and covering seeds with soil. For example, if there were wheat and barley seeds, or a bean and a lentil, lying on the ground and one covered them with soil, he is liable to the penalty of lashes. This is true regardless of whether one used his hand, his foot or an implement, and regardless of whether he plants them in the ground or in a perforated pot (which is tantamount to the ground). However, if one plants them in an unperforated pot, he is only liable to stripes for acting rebelliously.

Hilchos Kilayim 1:3

One may not plant mixed species for a non-Jew, though it is permitted to tell a non-Jew to plant mixed species for himself. It is prohibited to allow mixed species to remain in one’s field; one must uproot them, though if he retains them, he is not liable to the penalty of lashes. It is permitted for a Jew to manually plant mixed species outside of Israel; one may even mix seeds ab initio (l’chatchilah) and plant them. This has been transmitted to us through our oral Tradition.
