3,010. Redeeming Consecrated Property

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 7:1

Things that have been consecrated can’t be redeemed with real estate or with servants, who have certain halachic equivalence to real estate, nor with a promissory note because the physical note has no financial value. Lev. 27:23 says, “He shall give money,” which means cash and movable goods that are worth cash, even including bran.

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 7:2

When one redeems his own consecrated property, he must add the extra fifth. This includes the one who actually consecrated the property, his wife and his heirs, as has already been discussed. The extra fifth must also be in movable goods. The extra fifth becomes like the consecrated property and the same rules apply to both.
