I Chronicles 29:10
וַיְבָרֶךְ דָּוִיד אֶת ה’ לְעֵינֵי כָּל הַקָּהָל וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה’ אֱלֹקי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָבִינוּ מֵעוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם
David blessed G-d in front of the entire congregation, and David said, “Blessed are You, Hashem, the G-d of Israel our father, forever and ever.”
There are two ways that one might translate “Hashem, Elokai Yisroel Avinu.” One is that “Avinu” refers to G-d, i.e., “Hashem, the G-d of Israel, our Father.” The other is that it refers to Israel (the person – that is, Jacob – rather than the nation): “Hashem, the G-d of Israel our father.” Rashi and other commentators cite Bereishis Rabbah that the latter is correct. The referent of the verse is G-d’s relationship with our ancestor, not that He is our Father.
