3,003. Consecrating Something That Doesn't Belong to You

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 6:21

One can’t consecrate something that doesn’t belong to him. For example, if someone proscribes his son or daughter, his male or female Hebrew servant, or a field of acquisition, they are not proscribed. This is because he can’t consecrate something whose physical entity isn’t his.

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 6:22

One may also not consecrate something that is not in his domain. If person A entrusted an object to person B and person B denied having it, person A can’t consecrate it. However, if person B doesn’t deny having it, then it’s still considered to be in person A’s domain wherever it may be.
