(יד) כִּֽי־תָבֹ֣א אֶל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֖הּ וְיָשַׁ֣בְתָּה בָּ֑הּ וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ אָשִׂ֤ימָה עָלַי֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ כְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבֹתָֽי׃ (טו) שׂ֣וֹם תָּשִׂ֤ים עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בּ֑וֹ מִקֶּ֣רֶב אַחֶ֗יךָ תָּשִׂ֤ים עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ לֹ֣א תוּכַ֗ל לָתֵ֤ת עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ אִ֣ישׁ נׇכְרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־אָחִ֖יךָ הֽוּא׃ (טז) רַק֮ לֹא־יַרְבֶּה־לּ֣וֹ סוּסִים֒ וְלֹֽא־יָשִׁ֤יב אֶת־הָעָם֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה לְמַ֖עַן הַרְבּ֣וֹת ס֑וּס וַֽיהֹוָה֙ אָמַ֣ר לָכֶ֔ם לֹ֣א תֹסִפ֗וּן לָשׁ֛וּב בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ הַזֶּ֖ה עֽוֹד׃ (יז) וְלֹ֤א יַרְבֶּה־לּוֹ֙ נָשִׁ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ וְכֶ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב לֹ֥א יַרְבֶּה־לּ֖וֹ מְאֹֽד׃ (יח) וְהָיָ֣ה כְשִׁבְתּ֔וֹ עַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֣א מַמְלַכְתּ֑וֹ וְכָ֨תַב ל֜וֹ אֶת־מִשְׁנֵ֨ה הַתּוֹרָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ עַל־סֵ֔פֶר מִלִּפְנֵ֖י הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (יט) וְהָיְתָ֣ה עִמּ֔וֹ וְקָ֥רָא ב֖וֹ כׇּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֑יו לְמַ֣עַן יִלְמַ֗ד לְיִרְאָה֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔יו לִ֠שְׁמֹ֠ר אֶֽת־כׇּל־דִּבְרֵ֞י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּ֛את וְאֶת־הַחֻקִּ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לַעֲשֹׂתָֽם׃ (כ) לְבִלְתִּ֤י רוּם־לְבָבוֹ֙ מֵֽאֶחָ֔יו וּלְבִלְתִּ֛י ס֥וּר מִן־הַמִּצְוָ֖ה יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול לְמַ֩עַן֩ יַאֲרִ֨יךְ יָמִ֧ים עַל־מַמְלַכְתּ֛וֹ ה֥וּא וּבָנָ֖יו בְּקֶ֥רֶב יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {ס}
(יד) אֲרֵי תֵעוֹל לְאַרְעָא דַּיְיָ אֱלָהָךְ יָהֵב לָךְ וְתֵירְתַהּ וְתֵיתֵב בַּהּ וְתֵימַר אֱמַנִּי עֲלַי מַלְכָּא כְּכָל עַמְמַיָּא דִי בְסַחֲרָנָי: (טו) מַנָּאָה תְמַנֵּי עֲלָךְ מַלְכָּא דִּי יִתִּרְעֵי יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ בֵּיהּ מִגּוֹ אַחָיךְ תְּמַנֵּי עֲלָךְ מַלְכָּא לֵית לָךְ רְשׁוּ לְמַנָּאָה עֲלָךְ גְּבַר נוּכְרַי דִּי לָא אֲחוּךְ הוּא: (טז) לְחוֹד לָא יַסְגֵּי לֵיהּ סוּסָוָן וְלָא יָתֵב יָת עַמָּא לְמִצְרַיִם בְּדִיל לְאַסְגָּאָה לֵיהּ סוּסָוָן וַיְיָ אֲמַר לְכוֹן לָא תוֹסְפוּן לְמִתּוּב בְּאֹרַח הָדָא עוֹד: (יז) וְלָא יַסְגֵּי לֵיהּ נְשִׁין וְלָא יִטְעֵי לִבֵּיהּ וְכַסְפָּא וְדַהֲבָא לָא יַסְגֵּי לֵיהּ לַחֲדָא: (יח) וִיהֵי כְמִתְּבֵיהּ עַל כָּרְסָא מַלְכוּתֵיהּ וְיִכְתּוֹב לֵיהּ יָת פַּתְשֶׁגֶן אוֹרַיְתָא הָדָא עַל סִפְרָא מִן קֳדָם כָּהֲנַיָּא לֵוָאֵי: (יט) וּתְהֵי עִמֵּיהּ וִיהֵי קָרֵי בֵיהּ כָּל יוֹמֵי חַיּוֹהִי בְּדִיל דְּיֵלַף לְמִדְחַל קֳדָם יְיָ אֶלָהֵיהּ לְמִטַּר יָת כָּל פִּתְגָּמֵי אוֹרַיְתָא הָדָא וְיָת קְיָמַיָּא הָאִלֵּין לְמֶעְבָּדְהוֹן: (כ) בְּדִיל דְּלָא יְרִים לִבֵּיהּ מֵאֲחוֹהִי וּבְדִיל דְּלָא יִסְטֵי מִן תַּפְקֶדְתָּא יַמִּינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא בְּדִיל דְּיוֹרֵךְ יוֹמִין עַל מַלְכוּתֵיהּ הוּא וּבְנוֹהִי בְּגוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל:
14. When you come to the land that Hashem your God has given you, and inherited it and settled in it, and you say, ‘I will appoint a king over me like all the nations that are around me,’ 15. you shall surely appoint over yourself a king whom Hashem your God will favor. From among your people you shall appoint a king over you; you don’t have permission to appoint over you a foreign man who is not your brother. 16. Only he may not increase horses to himself and not return the people to Egypt in order to increase horses for him, and Hashem has said to you, ‘You shall not continue to return that way further.’ 17. And he shall not increase wives to himself, and his heart will not go astray; and silver and gold he shall not increase to himself excessively. 18. It shall be, when he sits on his royal throne, he shall write for himself a copy of this Torah[1] in a book from (the one that is) before the priests, the Levites. 19. It shall be with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, in order that he will learn to revere before Hashem his God, to observe all the words of this Torah, and these statutes, to perform them. 20. In order that his heart not be high[2] toward[3] his brethren and in order that he not turn from the commandment right or left, in order that he will lengthen (the) days of[4] his reign – he and his descendants – in the midst of Israel.
[1] Rashi, citing the gemara in Sanhedrin (21b), understands the Hebrew “mishnei haTorah” to mean two copies of the Torah. The implication of Onkelos’ Aramaic “pas’shegen” is not this way.
