Chapter 5
(א) וַיִּקְרָ֣א מֹשֶׁה֮ אֶל־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם שְׁמַ֤ע יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־הַחֻקִּ֣ים וְאֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָנֹכִ֛י דֹּבֵ֥ר בְּאׇזְנֵיכֶ֖ם הַיּ֑וֹם וּלְמַדְתֶּ֣ם אֹתָ֔ם וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם לַעֲשֹׂתָֽם׃ (ב) יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ כָּרַ֥ת עִמָּ֛נוּ בְּרִ֖ית בְּחֹרֵֽב׃ (ג) לֹ֣א אֶת־אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ כָּרַ֥ת יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־הַבְּרִ֣ית הַזֹּ֑את כִּ֣י אִתָּ֔נוּ אֲנַ֨חְנוּ אֵ֥לֶּה פֹ֛ה הַיּ֖וֹם כֻּלָּ֥נוּ חַיִּֽים׃ (ד) פָּנִ֣ים ׀ בְּפָנִ֗ים דִּבֶּ֨ר יְהֹוָ֧ה עִמָּכֶ֛ם בָּהָ֖ר מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ (ה) אָ֠נֹכִ֠י עֹמֵ֨ד בֵּין־יְהֹוָ֤ה וּבֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא לְהַגִּ֥יד לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֤י יְרֵאתֶם֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י הָאֵ֔שׁ וְלֹֽא־עֲלִיתֶ֥ם בָּהָ֖ר לֵאמֹֽר׃ {ס}
(א) וּקְרָא משֶׁה לְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יָת קְיָמַיָּא וְיָת דִּינַיָּא דִּי אֲנָא מְמַלֵּל קֳדָמֵיכוֹן יוֹמָא דֵין וְתַלְּפוּן יָתְהוֹן וְתִטְּרוּן לְמֶעְבָּדְהוֹן: (ב) יְיָ אֱלָהָנָא גְזַר עִמָּנָא קְיָם בְּחֹרֵב: (ג) לָא עִם אֲבָהָתָנָא גְּזַר יְיָ יָת קְיָמָא הָדָא אֶלָּהֵן עִמָּנָא אֲנַחְנָא אִלֵּין הָכָא יוֹמָא דֵין כֻּלָּנָא קַיָּמִין: (ד) מַמְלָל עִם מַמְלָל מַלִּיל יְיָ עִמְּכוֹן בְּטוּרָא מִגּוֹ אֶשָּׁתָא: (ה) אֲנָא הֲוֵיתִי קָאֵם בֵּין מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ וּבֵינֵיכוֹן בְּעִדָּנָא הַהִיא לְחַוָּאָה לְכוֹן יָת פִּתְגָּמָא דַיְיָ אֲרֵי דְחֶלְתּוּן מִקֳּדָם אֶשָּׁתָא וְלָא סְלֶקְתּוּן בְּטוּרָא לְמֵימָר:
1. Moshe called all Israel and he said to them,[1] “Listen, Israel, to the statutes and the laws that I speak before you[2] today. Study them and observe them to perform them. 2. Hashem our God carved a covenant with us at Choreiv. 3. It was not with our fathers that Hashem carved this covenant but with us – we, these here today, all of us alive. 4. Speech with speech[3] Hashem spoke with you on the mountain, from among the fire. 5. I stood between the word of Hashem and between you at that time to tell you the word of Hashem, because you were afraid from before the fire and you did not ascend the mountain, saying:
(ו) אָֽנֹכִ֖י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֣֥ית עֲבָדִ͏ֽים׃ (ז) לֹא־יִהְיֶ֥͏ה־לְךָ֛ אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִ֖ים עַל־פָּנָֽ͏ַי׃ (ח) לֹא־תַעֲשֶֽׂ֨ה־לְךָ֥ פֶ֣֙סֶל֙ ׀ כׇּל־תְּמוּנָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ ׀ מִמַּ֔עַל וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּאָ֖רֶץ מִתָּ֑͏חַת וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּמַּ֖יִם ׀ מִתַּ֥חַת לָאָֽרֶץ׃ (ט) לֹא־תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א תׇעׇבְדֵ֑ם כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֞י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ אֵ֣ל קַנָּ֔א פֹּ֠קֵ֠ד עֲוֺ֨ן אָב֧וֹת עַל־בָּנִ֛ים וְעַל־שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים וְעַל־רִבֵּעִ֖ים לְשֹׂנְאָֽי׃ (י) וְעֹ֥שֶׂה חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ לַֽאֲלָפִ֑ים לְאֹהֲבַ֖י וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מצותו [מִצְוֺתָֽי]׃ {ס}
(ו) אֲנָא יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ דִּי אַפֵּקְתָּךְ מֵאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עַבְדּוּתָא: (ז) לָא יְהֵא לָךְ אֱלָהָא אָחֳרָן בַּר מִנִּי: (ח) לָא תַעְבֵּד לָךְ צֶלֶם כָּל דְּמוּת דִּי בִשְׁמַיָּא מִלְּעֵלָּא וְדִי בְאַרְעָא מִלְּרָע וְדִי בְמַיָּא מִלְּרַע לְאַרְעָא: (ט) לָא תִסְגּוּד לְהוֹן וְלָא תִפְלְחִנּוּן אֲרֵי אֲנָא יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ אֵל קַנָּא מַסְעַר חוֹבֵי אֲבָהָן עַל בְּנִין מְרָדִין עַל דַּר תְּלִיתַי וְעַל דַּר רְבִיעַי לְשַׂנְאָי כַּד מְשַׁלְּמִין בְּנַיָּא לְמֶחֱטֵי בָּתַר אֲבָהָתְהוֹן: (י) וְעָבֵד טֵיבוּ לְאַלְפֵי דָרִין לְרַחֲמַי וּלְנָטְרֵי פִקּוֹדָי:
6. I am Hashem your God, Who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.[4] 7. There shall not be for you another ‘god’ aside from Me. 8. Do not make for yourself an image, any likeness that is in the heavens above, and that is on the earth below, and that is in the waters under the earth. 9. Do not bow down to them or and do not serve them because I, Hashem your God, am a zealous God, revisiting the sins of the parents on rebellious children, and on the third generation[5] and on the fourth generation of those who hate Me when the children continue to sin emulating their fathers, 10. and performing kindness to the thousands of generations of those who love Me and observe My commandments.
(יא) לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֛א אֶת־שֵׁם־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לַשָּׁ֑וְא כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יְנַקֶּה֙ יְהֹוָ֔ה אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־יִשָּׂ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ לַשָּֽׁוְא׃ {ס}
(יא) לָא תֵימֵי יָת שְׁמָא דַיְיָ אֱלָהָךְ לְמַגָּנָא אֲרֵי לָא יְזַכֵּי יְיָ יָת דִּי יֵמֵי בִשְׁמֵיהּ לְשִׁקְרָא:
11. Do not swear in the name of Hashem your God in vain[6] because Hashem will not acquit one who swears falsely in His name.
(יב) שָׁמ֛וֹר אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת לְקַדְּשׁ֑וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ ׀ יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽ֗יךָ׃ (יג) שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ כׇּל־מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ׃ (יד) וְיוֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י שַׁבָּ֖ת ׀ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לֹא תַעֲשֶׂ֙ה כׇל־מְלָאכָָ֜ה אַתָּ֣ה וּבִנְךָֽ־וּבִתֶּ֣ךָ וְעַבְדְּךָֽ־וַאֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וְשׁוֹרְךָ֤ וַחֲמֹֽרְךָ֙ וְכׇל־בְּהֶמְתֶּ֔ךָ וְגֵֽרְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ לְמַ֗עַן יָנ֛וּחַ עַבְדְּךָ֥ וַאֲמָתְךָ֖ כָּמֽוֹךָ׃ (טו) וְזָכַרְתָּ֗ כִּ֣י־עֶ֤בֶד הָיִ֣֙יתָ֙ ׀ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיֹצִ֨אֲךָ֜ יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֤֙יךָ מִשָּׁ֔ם בְּיָ֥ד חֲזָקָ֖ה וּבִזְרֹ֣עַ נְטוּיָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֗ן צִוְּךָ֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃ {ס}
(יב) טַר יָת יוֹמָא דְשַׁבְּתָא לְקַדָּשׁוּתֵיהּ כְּמָא דִי פַקְדָּךְ יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ: (יג) שִׁתָּא יוֹמִין תִּפְלָח וְתַעְבֵּד כָּל עִבִדְתָּךְ: (יד) וְיוֹמָא שְׁבִיעָאָה שַׁבְּתָא קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ לָא תַעְבֵּד כָּל עִבִידָא אַתְּ וּבְרָךְ וּבְרַתָּךְ וְעַבְדָּךְ וְאַמְתָךְ וְתוֹרָךְ וַחֲמָרָךְ וְכָל בְּעִירָךְ וְגִיּוֹרָךְ דִּי בְקִרְוָךְ בְּדִיל דִּי יְנוּחַ עַבְדָּךְ וְאַמְתָךְ כְּוָתָךְ: (טו) וְתִדְכַּר אֲרֵי עַבְדָּא הַוֵיתָא בְּאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם וְאַפְּקָךְ יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ מִתַּמָּן בִּידָא תַקִּיפָא וּבִדְרָעָא מְרָמָא עַל כֵּן פַּקְּדָךְ יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ לְמֶעְבַּד יָת יוֹמָא דְשַׁבְּתָא:
12. Observe the sabbath day to sanctify it, as Hashem your God commanded you. 13. (For) six days you shall work and perform all your labor, 14. and the seventh day is a sabbath before Hashem your God; you shall not perform any labor – you, and your son and your daughter, and your male servant and your female servant, and your ox and your donkey, and all your cattle, and your convert who is in your cities,[7] in order that your male servant and your female servant may rest like you. 15. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and Hashem your God took you out from there with a strong hand and with an upraised arm; therefore, Hashem your God commanded you to make the sabbath day.
(טז) כַּבֵּ֤ד אֶת־אָבִ֙יךָ֙ וְאֶת־אִמֶּ֔ךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לְמַ֣עַן ׀ יַאֲרִיכֻ֣ן יָמֶ֗יךָ וּלְמַ֙עַן֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ {ס}
(טז) יַקַּר יָת אֲבוּךְ וְיָת אִמָּךְ כְּמָא דִי פַקְּדָךְ יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ בְּדִיל דְּיוֹרְכוּן יוֹמָיךְ וּבְדִיל דְּיוֹטֶב לָךְ עַל אַרְעָא דַּיְיָ אֱלָהָךְ יָהֵב לָךְ:
16. Honor your father and your mother as Hashem your God commanded you, in order that you may lengthen your days, and so that it will be good for you on the land that Hashem your God gives to you.
(יז) לֹ֥א תִרְצַ֖͏ח׃ {ס} וְלֹ֣א תִנְאָ֑͏ף׃ {ס} וְלֹ֣א תִגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ {ס} וְלֹא־תַעֲנֶ֥ה בְרֵֽעֲךָ֖ עֵ֥ד שָֽׁוְא׃ {ס}
(יז) לָא תִקְטוֹל נְפָשׁ. וְלָא תְגוּף. וְלָא תִגְנוֹב. וְלָא תַסְהֵד בְּחַבְרָךְ סַהֲדוּתָא דְשִׁקְרָא:
17. Do not murder a soul, [8] and do not commit adultery, and do not steal, and do not testify a false testimony against your fellow.
(יח) וְלֹ֥א תַחְמֹ֖ד אֵ֣שֶׁת רֵעֶ֑ךָ {ס} וְלֹ֨א תִתְאַוֶּ֜ה בֵּ֣ית רֵעֶ֗ךָ שָׂדֵ֜הוּ וְעַבְדּ֤וֹ וַאֲמָתוֹ֙ שׁוֹר֣וֹ וַחֲמֹר֔וֹ וְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְרֵעֶֽךָ׃ {ס}
(יח) וְלָא תַחְמֵד אִתַּת חַבְרָךְ וְלָא תֵרוֹג בֵּית חַבְרָךְ חַקְלֵיהּ וְעַבְדֵּיהּ וְאַמְתֵיהּ תּוֹרֵיהּ וַחֲמָרֵיהּ וְכֹל דִּי לְחַבְרָךְ:
18. And do not covet your fellow’s wife, and do not desire your fellow’s house, his field, and his male servant and his female servant, his ox and his donkey, and everything that is your fellow’s.
