Berachos - Savri Rabosai

QUESTION: Before reciting the beracha of “Borei Pri Hagafen”, the custom is to say “savri rabosai”. Why is this so?

ANSWER: Shulchan Aruch (OC 174:8) writes that if wine is brought to the table in the middle of a meal, each person should recite their own beracha. The Rema explains that one person should not recite the beracha for the group, since some of the guests might be in the middle of eating, and they may choke if they answer Amen. However, if the host proclaims “savri rabosai” (Do my masters intend to fulfill the beracha?) before reciting the beracha, he can recite the beracha on behalf of all the guests. (A variation of savri is to add moranon virabonon virabosai). This introduction provides a warning to stop eating, and the sakana (danger) is obviated when answering Amen.
