(כא) וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ וַיָּתֻ֣רוּ אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ מִמִּדְבַּר־צִ֥ן עַד־רְחֹ֖ב לְבֹ֥א חֲמָֽת׃ (כב) וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בַנֶּ֘גֶב֮ וַיָּבֹ֣א עַד־חֶבְרוֹן֒ וְשָׁ֤ם אֲחִימַן֙ שֵׁשַׁ֣י וְתַלְמַ֔י יְלִידֵ֖י הָעֲנָ֑ק וְחֶבְר֗וֹן שֶׁ֤בַע שָׁנִים֙ נִבְנְתָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י צֹ֥עַן מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (כג) וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ עַד־נַ֣חַל אֶשְׁכֹּ֗ל וַיִּכְרְת֨וּ מִשָּׁ֤ם זְמוֹרָה֙ וְאֶשְׁכּ֤וֹל עֲנָבִים֙ אֶחָ֔ד וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֥הוּ בַמּ֖וֹט בִּשְׁנָ֑יִם וּמִן־הָרִמֹּנִ֖ים וּמִן־הַתְּאֵנִֽים׃ (כד) לַמָּק֣וֹם הַה֔וּא קָרָ֖א נַ֣חַל אֶשְׁכּ֑וֹל עַ֚ל אֹד֣וֹת הָֽאֶשְׁכּ֔וֹל אֲשֶׁר־כָּרְת֥וּ מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (כה) וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ מִתּ֣וּר הָאָ֑רֶץ מִקֵּ֖ץ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יֽוֹם׃ (כו) וַיֵּלְכ֡וּ וַיָּבֹ֩אוּ֩ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֜ן וְאֶל־כׇּל־עֲדַ֧ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־מִדְבַּ֥ר פָּארָ֖ן קָדֵ֑שָׁה וַיָּשִׁ֨יבוּ אֹתָ֤ם דָּבָר֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַיַּרְא֖וּם אֶת־פְּרִ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (כז) וַיְסַפְּרוּ־לוֹ֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ בָּ֕אנוּ אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁלַחְתָּ֑נוּ וְ֠גַ֠ם זָבַ֨ת חָלָ֥ב וּדְבַ֛שׁ הִ֖וא וְזֶה־פִּרְיָֽהּ׃ (כח) אֶ֚פֶס כִּֽי־עַ֣ז הָעָ֔ם הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְהֶֽעָרִ֗ים בְּצֻר֤וֹת גְּדֹלֹת֙ מְאֹ֔ד וְגַם־יְלִדֵ֥י הָֽעֲנָ֖ק רָאִ֥ינוּ שָֽׁם׃ (כט) עֲמָלֵ֥ק יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּאֶ֣רֶץ הַנֶּ֑גֶב וְ֠הַֽחִתִּ֠י וְהַיְבוּסִ֤י וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּהָ֔ר וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב עַל־הַיָּ֔ם וְעַ֖ל יַ֥ד הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (ל) וַיַּ֧הַס כָּלֵ֛ב אֶת־הָעָ֖ם אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עָלֹ֤ה נַעֲלֶה֙ וְיָרַ֣שְׁנוּ אֹתָ֔הּ כִּֽי־יָכ֥וֹל נוּכַ֖ל לָֽהּ׃ (לא) וְהָ֨אֲנָשִׁ֜ים אֲשֶׁר־עָל֤וּ עִמּוֹ֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹ֥א נוּכַ֖ל לַעֲל֣וֹת אֶל־הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־חָזָ֥ק ה֖וּא מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (לב) וַיֹּצִ֜יאוּ דִּבַּ֤ת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תָּר֣וּ אֹתָ֔הּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הָאָ֡רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֩ עָבַ֨רְנוּ בָ֜הּ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֗הּ אֶ֣רֶץ אֹכֶ֤לֶת יוֹשְׁבֶ֙יהָ֙ הִ֔וא וְכׇל־הָעָ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־רָאִ֥ינוּ בְתוֹכָ֖הּ אַנְשֵׁ֥י מִדּֽוֹת׃ (לג) וְשָׁ֣ם רָאִ֗ינוּ אֶת־הַנְּפִילִ֛ים בְּנֵ֥י עֲנָ֖ק מִן־הַנְּפִלִ֑ים וַנְּהִ֤י בְעֵינֵ֙ינוּ֙ כַּֽחֲגָבִ֔ים וְכֵ֥ן הָיִ֖ינוּ בְּעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃
(כא) וּסְלִיקוּ וְאַלִּילוּ יָת אַרְעָא מִמַּדבְּרָא דְצִין עַד רְחוֹב לִמְטֵי חֲמָת: (כב) וּסְלִיקוּ בִדְרוֹמָא וַאֲתָא עַד חֶבְרוֹן וְתַמָּן אֲחִימָן שֵׁשַׁי וְתַלְמַי בְּנֵי גִּבָּרַיָּא וְחֶבְרוֹן שְׁבַע שְׁנִין אִתְבְּנִיאַת קֳדָם טָנַס דְּמִצְרָיִם: (כג) וַאֲתוֹ עַד נַחֲלָא דְאַתְכָּלָא וּקְצוֹ מִתַּמָּן עוֹבַרְתָּא וְאַתְכַּל עִנְּבִין חַד וּנְטָלוֹהִי בַאֲרִיחָא בִּתְרֵין וּמִן רִמּוֹנַיָּא וּמִן תְּאֵנַיָּא: (כד) לְאַתְרָא הַהוּא קְרָא נַחְלָא דְאַתְכָּלָא עַל עֵסַק אַתְכָּלָא דִּקְצוֹ מִתַּמָּן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: (כה) וְתָבוּ מִלְּאַלָּלָא יָת אַרְעָא מִסּוֹף אַרְבְּעִין יוֹמִין: (כו) וַאֲזָלוּ וַאֲתוֹ לְוַת משֶׁה וּלְוָת אַהֲרֹן וּלְוַת כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמַדְבְּרָא דְפָארָן לִרְקָם וַאֲתִיבוּ יָתְהוֹן פִּתְגָּמָא וְיָת כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא וְאַחֲזִיאֻנּוּן יָת אִבָּא דְאַרְעָא: (כז) וְאִשְׁתָּעִיאוּ לֵיהּ וַאֲמָרוּ אֲתֵינָא לְאַרְעָא דִּי שְׁלַחְתָּנָא וְאַף עָבְדָא חֲלַב וּדְבַשׁ הִיא וְדֵין אִבַּהּ: (כח) לְחוֹד אֲרֵי תַקִּיף עַמָּא דְּיָתֵב בְּאַרְעָא וְקִרְוַיָּא כְּרִיכַן רַבְרְבַן לַחֲדָא וְאַף בְּנֵי גִבָּרַיָּא חֲזֵינָא תַמָּן: (כט) עֲמַלְקָאָה יָתֵב בַּאֲרַע דָּרוֹמָא וְחִתָּאָה וִיבוּסָאָה וֶאֱמוֹרָאָה יָתֵב בְּטוּרָא וּכְנַעֲנָאָה יָתֵב עַל יַמָּא וְעַל כֵּיף יַרְדְּנָא: (ל) וְאַצֵּית כָּלֵב יָת עַמָּא לְמשֶׁה וַאֲמַר מֵיסַק נֵיסַק וְנִירַת יָתַהּ אֲרֵי מֵיכַל נֵיכוּל לַהּ: (לא) וְגֻבְרַיָּא דִּי סְלִיקוּ עִמֵּיהּ אֲמָרוּ לָא נֵיכוּל לְמֵיסַק לְוַת עַמָּא אֲרֵי תַקִּיף הוּא מִנָּנָא: (לב) וְאַפִּיקוּ שׁוּם בִּישׁ עַל אַרְעָא דִּי אַלִּילוּ יָתַהּ לְוַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמֵימָר אַרְעָא דִּי עֲבַרְנָא בַהּ לְאַלָּלָא יָתַהּ אַרְעָא מְקַטְּלַת יַתְבָהָא הִיא וְכָל עַמָּא דִּי חֲזֵינָא בְגַוָּהּ אֱנָשִׁין דְּמִשְׁחָן: (לג) וְתַמָּן חֲזֵינָא יָת גִּבָּרַיָּא בְּנֵי עֲנָק מִן גִּבָּרַיָּא וַהֲוֵינָא בְּעֵינֵי נַפְשָׁנָא כְּקַמְצִין וְכֵן הֲוֵינָא בְּעֵינֵיהוֹן:
21. They ascended and scouted the land from the Tzin wilderness until R’chov[1] coming to Chamas. 22. They ascended in the south and came until Chevron, and there were Achiman, Sheishai and Talmai, descendants of the mighty.[2] And Chevron was built seven years before Tanis[3] in Egypt. 23. They reached the Eshkol valley and they cut from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes – they carried it on a pole by two (of them) – and from the pomegranates and from the figs. 24. That place was called the Eshkol valley because of the cluster that the children of Israel cut from there. 25. They returned from scouting the land at the end of 40 days. 26. They went and they came to Moshe, to Aharon and to the entire congregation of the children of Israel, to the Paran wilderness in R’kam.[4] They returned word to them and to the entire congregation, and they showed them the fruit of the land. 27. They spoke to him and they said, “We came to the land to which you sent us, and it also generates[5] milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28. However, the people who dwell in the land are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. And also, we saw the descendants of the mighty there. 29. Amalekites dwell in the southland; Hittites, Jebusites and Emorites dwell on the mountain; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and on the bank of[6] the Jordan.” 30. Kaleiv made the people listen[7] to Moshe. He said, “Let us surely go up; we will take possession of it because we shall surely overpower it.” 31. And the men who had ascended with him said, “We are unable to go up against[8] that people because it is mightier than us.” 32. They spread a bad name[9] about the land they had scouted to the children of Israel, saying, “The land through which we passed (in order) to scout it is a land that kills[10] its inhabitants, and the entire people that we saw in it are men of stature.[11] 33. And we saw the mighty[12] there – the descendants of Anak of the mighty. We were like grasshoppers in our own eyes,[13] and so we were in their eyes.”
Chapter 14
(א) וַתִּשָּׂא֙ כׇּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַֽיִּתְּנ֖וּ אֶת־קוֹלָ֑ם וַיִּבְכּ֥וּ הָעָ֖ם בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַהֽוּא׃ (ב) וַיִּלֹּ֙נוּ֙ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן כֹּ֖ל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֲלֵהֶ֜ם כׇּל־הָעֵדָ֗ה לוּ־מַ֙תְנוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם א֛וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה לוּ־מָֽתְנוּ׃ (ג) וְלָמָ֣ה יְ֠הֹוָ֠ה מֵבִ֨יא אֹתָ֜נוּ אֶל־הָאָ֤רֶץ הַזֹּאת֙ לִנְפֹּ֣ל בַּחֶ֔רֶב נָשֵׁ֥ינוּ וְטַפֵּ֖נוּ יִהְי֣וּ לָבַ֑ז הֲל֧וֹא ט֦וֹב לָ֖נוּ שׁ֥וּב מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (ד) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֑יו נִתְּנָ֥ה רֹ֖אשׁ וְנָשׁ֥וּבָה מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (ה) וַיִּפֹּ֥ל מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם לִפְנֵ֕י כׇּל־קְהַ֥ל עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (ו) וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֗וּן וְכָלֵב֙ בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֔ה מִן־הַתָּרִ֖ים אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ קָרְע֖וּ בִּגְדֵיהֶֽם׃ (ז) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֶל־כׇּל־עֲדַ֥ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֤רְנוּ בָהּ֙ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֔הּ טוֹבָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃
(א) וַאֲרִימַת כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא וִיהָבוּ יָת קָלְהוֹן וּבְכוֹ עַמָּא בְּלֵילְיָא הַהוּא: (ב) וְאִתְרַעֲמוּ עַל משֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן כֹּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַאֲמָרוּ לְהוֹן כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא לְוַי דְמִיתְנָא בְּאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם אוֹ בְּמַדְבְּרָא הָדֵין לְוַי דְמִיתְנָא: (ג) וּלְמָא יְיָ מָעֵל יָתָנָא לְאַרְעָא הָדָא לְמִנְפַּל בְּחַרְבָּא נְשָׁנָא וְטַפְלָנָא יְהוֹן לְבִזָּא הֲלָא טַב לָנָא דִּי נְתוּב לְמִצְרָיִם: (ד) וַאֲמָרוּ גְּבַר לְאָחוֹהִי נְמַנֵּי רֵישָׁא וּנְתוּב לְמִצְרָיִם: (ה) וּנְפַל משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן עַל אַפֵּיהוֹן קֳדָם כָּל קְהַל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: (ו) וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בַּר נוּן וְכָלֵב בַּר יְפֻנֶּה מִן מְאַלֲּלֵי יָת אַרְעָא בְּזָעוּ לְבוּשֵׁיהוֹן: (ז) וַאֲמָרוּ לְכָל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמֵימָר אַרְעָא דִּי עֲבַרְנָא בַהּ לְאַלָּלָא יָתַהּ טָבָא אַרְעָא לַחֲדָא לַחֲדָא:
1. The entire congregation raised (their voices) and lamented,[14] and the people cried on that night. 2. All the children of Israel complained against Moshe and against Aharon. The entire congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!” 3. Why is Hashem bringing us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be for spoils! Wouldn’t it be better for us that we return to Egypt?” 4. They said to one another,[15] “Let’s appoint a leader[16] and return to Egypt!” 5. Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before (the) entire assembled congregation of (the) children of Israel. 6. Yehoshua son of Nun and Kaleiv son of Yefuneh, from those who scouted the land, tore their garments. 7. They said to (the) entire congregation of (the) children of Israel, saying, “The land through which we passed in order to scout it is an extremely good[17] land.
