Chapter 4
(א) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ (ב) נָשֹׂ֗א אֶת־רֹאשׁ֙ בְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֔ת מִתּ֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֑י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֥ית אֲבֹתָֽם׃ (ג) מִבֶּ֨ן שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה וְעַ֖ד בֶּן־חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה כׇּל־בָּא֙ לַצָּבָ֔א לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת מְלָאכָ֖ה בְּאֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃ (ד) זֹ֛את עֲבֹדַ֥ת בְּנֵי־קְהָ֖ת בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד קֹ֖דֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִֽׁים׃ (ה) וּבָ֨א אַהֲרֹ֤ן וּבָנָיו֙ בִּנְסֹ֣עַ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְהוֹרִ֕דוּ אֵ֖ת פָּרֹ֣כֶת הַמָּסָ֑ךְ וְכִ֨סּוּ־בָ֔הּ אֵ֖ת אֲרֹ֥ן הָעֵדֻֽת׃ (ו) וְנָתְנ֣וּ עָלָ֗יו כְּסוּי֙ ע֣וֹר תַּ֔חַשׁ וּפָרְשׂ֧וּ בֶֽגֶד־כְּלִ֛יל תְּכֵ֖לֶת מִלְמָ֑עְלָה וְשָׂמ֖וּ בַּדָּֽיו׃ (ז) וְעַ֣ל ׀ שֻׁלְחַ֣ן הַפָּנִ֗ים יִפְרְשׂוּ֮ בֶּ֣גֶד תְּכֵ֒לֶת֒ וְנָתְנ֣וּ עָ֠לָ֠יו אֶת־הַקְּעָרֹ֤ת וְאֶת־הַכַּפֹּת֙ וְאֶת־הַמְּנַקִּיֹּ֔ת וְאֵ֖ת קְשׂ֣וֹת הַנָּ֑סֶךְ וְלֶ֥חֶם הַתָּמִ֖יד עָלָ֥יו יִהְיֶֽה׃ (ח) וּפָרְשׂ֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם בֶּ֚גֶד תּוֹלַ֣עַת שָׁנִ֔י וְכִסּ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ בְּמִכְסֵ֖ה ע֣וֹר תָּ֑חַשׁ וְשָׂמ֖וּ אֶת־בַּדָּֽיו׃ (ט) וְלָקְח֣וּ ׀ בֶּ֣גֶד תְּכֵ֗לֶת וְכִסּ֞וּ אֶת־מְנֹרַ֤ת הַמָּאוֹר֙ וְאֶת־נֵ֣רֹתֶ֔יהָ וְאֶת־מַלְקָחֶ֖יהָ וְאֶת־מַחְתֹּתֶ֑יהָ וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־כְּלֵ֣י שַׁמְנָ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְשָׁרְתוּ־לָ֖הּ בָּהֶֽם׃ (י) וְנָתְנ֤וּ אֹתָהּ֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלֶ֔יהָ אֶל־מִכְסֵ֖ה ע֣וֹר תָּ֑חַשׁ וְנָתְנ֖וּ עַל־הַמּֽוֹט׃ (יא) וְעַ֣ל ׀ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַזָּהָ֗ב יִפְרְשׂוּ֙ בֶּ֣גֶד תְּכֵ֔לֶת וְכִסּ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ בְּמִכְסֵ֖ה ע֣וֹר תָּ֑חַשׁ וְשָׂמ֖וּ אֶת־בַּדָּֽיו׃ (יב) וְלָקְחוּ֩ אֶת־כׇּל־כְּלֵ֨י הַשָּׁרֵ֜ת אֲשֶׁ֧ר יְשָֽׁרְתוּ־בָ֣ם בַּקֹּ֗דֶשׁ וְנָֽתְנוּ֙ אֶל־בֶּ֣גֶד תְּכֵ֔לֶת וְכִסּ֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם בְּמִכְסֵ֖ה ע֣וֹר תָּ֑חַשׁ וְנָתְנ֖וּ עַל־הַמּֽוֹט׃ (יג) וְדִשְּׁנ֖וּ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וּפָרְשׂ֣וּ עָלָ֔יו בֶּ֖גֶד אַרְגָּמָֽן׃ (יד) וְנָתְנ֣וּ עָ֠לָ֠יו אֶֽת־כׇּל־כֵּלָ֞יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְֽשָׁרְת֧וּ עָלָ֣יו בָּהֶ֗ם אֶת־הַמַּחְתֹּ֤ת אֶת־הַמִּזְלָגֹת֙ וְאֶת־הַיָּעִ֣ים וְאֶת־הַמִּזְרָקֹ֔ת כֹּ֖ל כְּלֵ֣י הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וּפָרְשׂ֣וּ עָלָ֗יו כְּס֛וּי ע֥וֹר תַּ֖חַשׁ וְשָׂמ֥וּ בַדָּֽיו׃ (טו) וְכִלָּ֣ה אַֽהֲרֹן־וּ֠בָנָ֠יו לְכַסֹּ֨ת אֶת־הַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ וְאֶת־כׇּל־כְּלֵ֣י הַקֹּ֘דֶשׁ֮ בִּנְסֹ֣עַ הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֒ וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵ֗ן יָבֹ֤אוּ בְנֵי־קְהָת֙ לָשֵׂ֔את וְלֹֽא־יִגְּע֥וּ אֶל־הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ וָמֵ֑תוּ אֵ֛לֶּה מַשָּׂ֥א בְנֵֽי־קְהָ֖ת בְּאֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃ (טז) וּפְקֻדַּ֞ת אֶלְעָזָ֣ר ׀ בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמָּאוֹר֙ וּקְטֹ֣רֶת הַסַּמִּ֔ים וּמִנְחַ֥ת הַתָּמִ֖יד וְשֶׁ֣מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָ֑ה פְּקֻדַּ֗ת כׇּל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁר־בּ֔וֹ בְּקֹ֖דֶשׁ וּבְכֵלָֽיו׃ {פ}
(א) וּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה וְעִם אַהֲרֹן לְמֵימָר: (ב) קַבִּילוּ יָת חֻשְׁבַּן בְּנֵי קְהָת מִגּוֹ בְּנֵי לֵוִי לְזַרְעֲיַתְהוֹן לְבֵית אֲבָהַתְהוֹן: (ג) מִבַּר תְּלָתִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵלָּא וְעַד בַּר חַמְשִׁין שְׁנִין כָּל דְּאָתֵי לְחֵילָא לְמֶעְבַּד עִבִדְתָּא בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא: (ד) דֵּין פּוּלְחַן בְּנֵי קְהָת בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא קֹדֶשׁ קוּדְשַׁיָּא: (ה) וְיֵעוֹל אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי בְּמִטַּל מַשְׁרִיתָא וִיפָרְקוּן יָת פָּרֻכְתָּא דִפְרָסָא וִיכַסּוּן בַּהּ יָת אֲרוֹנָא דְסַהֲדוּתָא: (ו) וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי חוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וְיִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ גְּמִיר תִּכְלָא מִלְעֵלָּא וִישַׁוּוּן אֲרִיחוֹהִי: (ז) וְעַל פָּתוֹרָא דִלְחֵם אַפַּיָּא יִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ תִּכְלָא וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי יָת מָגִיסַיָּא וְיָת בָּזִיכַיָּא וְיָת מְכִילָתָא וְיָת קַסְווֹת נִסּוּכָא וּלְחֵם תְּדִירָא עֲלוֹהִי יְהֵי: (ח) וְיִפְרְסוּן עֲלֵיהוֹן לְבוּשׁ צְבַע זְהוֹרִי וִיכַסּוּן יָתֵיהּ בְּחוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וִישַׁוּוּן יָת אֲרִיחוֹהִי: (ט) וְיִסְּבוּן לְבוּשׁ תִּכְלָא וִיכַסּוּן יָת מְנַרְתָּא דְאַנְהוֹרֵי וְיָת בּוֹצִינָהָא וְיָת צִבְתָהָא וְיָת מַחְתְּיתָהָא וְיָת כָּל מָנֵי מִשְׁחָא דִּי יְשַׁמְּשׁוּן לֵיהּ בְּהוֹן: (י) וְיִתְּנוּן יָתַהּ וְיָת כָּל מָנָהָא לְחוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וְיִתְּנוּן עַל אֲרִיחָא: (יא) וְעַל מַדְבְּחָא דְדַהֲבָא יִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ תִּכְלָא וִיכַסּוּן יָתֵיהּ בְּחוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וִישַׁוּוּן יָת אֲרִיחוֹהִי: (יב) וְיִסְּבוּן יָת כָּל מָנֵי שִׁמּוּשָׁא דִּי יְשַׁמְּשׁוּן בְּהוֹן בְּקוּדְשָׁא וְיִתְּנוּן לִלְבוּשׁ תִּכְלָא וִיכַסּוּן יָתְהוֹן בְּחוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וְיִתְּנוּן עַל אֲרִיחָא: (יג) וְיִסְּפוּן יָת קִטְמָא דְמַדְבְּחָא וְיִפְרְסוּן עֲלוֹהִי לְבוּשׁ אַרְגְּוָן: (יד) וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי יָת כָּל מָנוֹהִי דִּי יְשַׁמְּשׁוּן עֲלוֹהִי בְהוֹן יָת מַחְתְּיָתָא וְיָת צִנּוֹרְיָתָא וְיָת מַגְרוֹפְיָתָא וְיָת מִזְרְקַיָּא כֹּל מָנֵי מַדְבְּחָא וְיִפְרְסוּן עֲלוֹהִי חוֹפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סַסְגּוֹנָא וִישַׁווּן אֲרִיחוֹהִי: (טו) וִישֵׁיצֵי אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי לְכַסָּאָה יָת קוּדְשָׁא וְיָת כָּל מָנֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּמִטַּל מַשְׁרִיתָא וּבָתַר כֵּן יֵעֲלוּן בְּנֵי קְהָת לְמִטַּל וְלָא יִקְרְבוּן לְקוּדְשָׁא וְלָא יְמוּתוּן אִלֵּין מַטּוּל בְּנֵי קְהָת בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא: (טז) וְדִי מְסִיר לְאֶלְעָזָר בַּר אַהֲרֹן כַּהֲנָא מִשְׁחָא דְאַנְהָרוּתָא וּקְטֹרֶת בּוּסְמַיָּא וּמִנְחָתָא תְדִירָא וּמִשְׁחָא דִרְבוּתָא מַטְרַת כָּל מַשְׁכְּנָא וְכָל דִּי בֵיהּ בְּקוּדְשָׁא וּבְמָנוֹהִי:
1. Hashem spoke with Moshe and to Aharon, saying: 2. Acquire the accounting of the sons of Kehas from among the Levites, according to their families by their fathers’ house(s), 3. from age 30 years and up to age 50, all who enter the service to perform labor in the Tent of Meeting. 4. This is the service of the sons of Kehas in the Tent of Meeting: the most holy (items). 5. Aharon and his sons shall come when the camp travels and disassemble the drape that screens and cover the ark of the testimony with it. 6. They shall place on it a covering of multicolored[1] skin and spread a cloth of pure blue on top; and they shall place its poles. 7. Over the table of the showbread[2] they shall spread a blue cloth and place on it the dishes, the ladles, the bowls, and the libation jugs, and the bread (that is offered) continual(ly) will be on it. 8. They shall spread over them a crimson-dyed cloth and cover it with a covering of multicolored skin; and they shall place its poles. 9. They shall take a blue cloth and cover the Menorah for lighting, and its lamps, and its tongs, and its pans, and all the oil vessels that they service it with them. 10. They shall put it and all its utensils in a covering of multicolored skin, and place it on a pole. 11. And on the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth and cover it with a covering of multicolored skin, and they shall place its poles. 12. They shall take all the service utensils with which they serve in the sanctuary and put them in a blue cloth and cover them with a covering of multicolored skin, and place them on a pole. 13. They shall remove the ashes from the (copper) altar and spread on it a purple cloth. 14. They shall place on it all the utensils with which they service it: the pans, the forks, the shovels and the basins – all the vessels of the altar – and they shall spread on it a covering of multicolored skin, and they shall place its poles. 15. Aharon and his sons shall finish covering the holy (items) and all the utensils of the holy (items) when the camp travels, and after that the sons of Kehas shall come to carry (them). And they shall not touch the holy (items) and they won’t die. These are the load of the sons of Kehas in the Tent of Meeting. 16. And the charge of Elazar son of Aharon the priest: the lighting oil, the spice incense, the continual flour offering and the elevation oil[3] – the charge of all the Tabernacle and all that is in it of the holy and of its utensils.
(יז) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ (יח) אַל־תַּכְרִ֕יתוּ אֶת־שֵׁ֖בֶט מִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַקְּהָתִ֑י מִתּ֖וֹךְ הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (יט) וְזֹ֣את ׀ עֲשׂ֣וּ לָהֶ֗ם וְחָיוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יָמֻ֔תוּ בְּגִשְׁתָּ֖ם אֶת־קֹ֣דֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁ֑ים אַהֲרֹ֤ן וּבָנָיו֙ יָבֹ֔אוּ וְשָׂמ֣וּ אוֹתָ֗ם אִ֥ישׁ אִ֛ישׁ עַל־עֲבֹדָת֖וֹ וְאֶל־מַשָּׂאֽוֹ׃ (כ) וְלֹא־יָבֹ֧אוּ לִרְא֛וֹת כְּבַלַּ֥ע אֶת־הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ וָמֵֽתוּ׃ {פ}
(יז) וּמַלִּיל יְיָ עִם משֶׁה וְעִם אַהֲרֹן לְמֵימָר: (יח) לָא תְשֵׁיצוּן יָת שִׁבְטָא זַרְעֲיַת קְהָת מִגּוֹ לֵוָאֵי: (יט) וְדָא עִבִידוּ לְהוֹן וְיֵחוּן וְלָא יְמוּתוּן בְּמִקְרַבְהוֹן לְקֹדֶשׁ קוּדְשַׁיָּא אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי יֵעֲלוּן וִימַנּוּן יָתְהוֹן גְּבַר גְּבַר עַל פּוּלְחָנֵיהּ וּלְמַטּוּלֵיהּ: (כ) וְלָא יֵעֲלוּן לְמֶחֱזֵי כַּד מְכַסָּן יָת מָנֵי קוּדְשָׁא וְלָא יְמוּתוּן:
17. Hashem spoke with Moshe and to Aharon, saying: 18. Do not eradicate[4] the tribe of the families of Kehas[5] from among the Levites. 19. This shall you do for them, and they will live and not die when they draw near to the most holy (items): Aharon and his sons shall come and assign them each[6] to his work and to his load. 20. And they[7] shall not come inside to see when they[8] cover the holy things,[9] and they won’t die.
[1] The Hebrew “tachash” has been variously identified as a seal, a narwhal, a giraffe, et al. Onkelos renders it “sasgona,” meaning “it delights in its colors.” (See Rashi on Exodus 25:5.)
