1. Hashem said to Moshe: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aharon, and say to them: One shall not impurify (himself) for the dead[1] of his people, 2. except for his closest relative to him: for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother, 3. and for his virgin sister, who is close to him because she hasn’t been to a man; for her he may impurify (himself). 4. A great one[2] among his people shall not defile himself to profane himself. 5. They shall not make bald spots on their heads, and the corner(s) of their beards they shall not shave, and in their flesh they shall not inflict a wound.[3] 6. They shall be holy before their God and not profane the name of their God because they offer Hashem’s offerings,[4] the offering[5] of their God, and they shall be holy.[6] 7. A “harlot”[7] and a profaned (woman) they shall not take,[8] and a woman divorced from her husband they shall not take because he[9] is holy before God. 8. You shall sanctify him because he offers the offering of your God. He shall be holy to you because I, Hashem who sanctifies you, am holy. 9. And the daughter of a man (who is a) priest if she defiles herself through “harlotry,” she is desecrated from her father’s holiness;[10] in fire she shall be burned.

10. And the priest who will be greater than his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil will be poured and who will offer his offering[11] to wear the garments, his head he shall not let wild and his garments he shall not tear. 11. And to[12] all dead souls he shall not come; for his father and for his mother he shall not impurify himself. 12. And from the sanctuary he shall not go out and he shall not desecrate the sanctuary of his God because the crown of his God’s elevation oil[13] is upon him; I am Hashem. 13. He shall take a woman in her virginity (as a wife). 14. A widow, and a divorcee, and a profaned (woman, and a) “harlot” – these he shall not take. Only a virgin from his people shall he take (for) a wife, 15. and he will not desecrate his descendants[14] among his people because I, Hashem, sanctify him.
