2. He made the apron (of) gold, blue, purple and crimson-dyed wool and twisted linen. 3. They hammered sheets of gold and they[1] cut threads to work among the blue, among the purple and among the crimson-dyed wool, and among the linen, the work of a craftsman. 4. They made attached shoulder (piece)s for it; they were attached on its two sides. 5. The decorative band that was on it was of it,[2] like its work: gold, blue, purple, and crimson-dyed wool, and twisted linen as Hashem commanded Moshe.

6. They made the beryl stones, inset in gold settings, engraved in clear writing[3] with the names of the sons of Yisroel. 7. They placed them on the shoulders of the apron (as) stones of remembrance for the children of Israel as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

8. He made the breastplate the work of a craftsman like the work of the apron, (of) gold, blue, purple and crimson-dyed wool, and twisted linen. 9. It was square; they made the breastplate doubled, its length a span and its width a span, doubled. 10. They completed in it four rows of good stones. The first[4] row was a row of carnelian, topaz and emerald;[5] 11. and the second row: turquoise, sapphire and amethyst; 12. and the third row: jacinth, agate and crystal; 13. and the fourth row: beryl, onyx and jasper. They were enclosed in gold settings in their wholeness. 14. The stones were for the names of the sons of Yisroel – 12, corresponding to their names – clear writing like the engraving of a ring,[6] each according to its name[7] for the 12 Tribes. 15. They made on the breastplate braided chains on the edge (of) pure gold. 16. They made two settings of gold and two rings of gold, and put the two rings on the two sides[8] of the breastplate. 17. They put the two gold cords to the two rings at the sides of the breastplate. 18. The two cords that are on the two sides[9] they put on the two settings, and they put them on the shoulders of the apron, facing its front. 19. They made two gold rings and placed them on the two sides of the breastplate, on its edge, which were on the inward side of the apron. 20. They made two (more) gold rings and placed them on the two shoulders of the apron below, facing its front, near the place it attaches[10] over the decorative band. 21. They connected the breastplate from its rings to the rings of the apron with a string of blue to remain on the decorative band of the apron, so the breastplate should not come loose from on top of the apron as Hashem commanded Moshe.

[1] Rather than “he.”

[2] i.e., of one piece with it.

[3] Rather than “with the engravings of a seal.”

[4] Hebrew: “one.”

[5] As noted in parshas Tetzaveh, the identities of the 12 stones are far from clear, both in the Chumash and the Targum. We’re not going to try to be definitive here.

[6] i.e., a signet ring.

[7] Literally “a man on his name.”

[8] Rather than “ends.”

[9] As opposed to “the two ends of the two cords.”

[10] Rather than “its seam.”
