Take My Field – Please!

If a person pledges a field from his hereditary property to the Temple, its value will be calculated based upon how much seed one can sow there, as well as how far it is from the next Jubilee year. If the owner wants to redeem the field, he pays that amount plus 20 percent. If someone else redeems it, or if the Temple treasurer sells it, the original owner loses his claim on the property. When the Jubilee rolls around, the field will revert not to the original owner, but to the kohanim. (The kohanim have to pay the Temple the value of the field, though not the extra 20 percent – see Talmud Arachin 25b.)
