Nazir - Daf 14

  • Rava’s inquiries about interrupting nezirus term declarations

On the previous Daf, Rava asked: If one declared to be a nazir after twenty days, and a hundred-day nazir from now, what is the halachah? Do we say that he does not want his hundred-day nezirus interrupted by his short term nezirus, and it does not begin until after his thirty-day term is complete? Or do we say that since, even if it will be interrupted, there will still remain eighty days to his first nezirus (longer than a full thirty-day growth), he does not mind its interruption and it begins immediately? The Gemara notes that Rava can also ask about one who declared a standard term after twenty days, plus an additional term, if the second term would begin right away and be interrupted. Rava asked further: If one said: הריני נזיר לאחר כ' יום ומעכשיו נזיר עולם – “I am a nazir after twenty days, and now a permanent nazir, do we say that the permanent term begins right away (and is interrupted by the standard nezirus), or would he not want it to start right away and be interrupted by a term of a different sort with different halachos? If we conclude he does not mind the interruption, because the standard nezirus can be annulled, what if he said, “I will be a nazir Shimshon (which cannot be annulled) after twenty days, and a [standard] nazir now”?

  • Machlokes about one who became tamei during an interrupted nezirus

The Gemara presents a machlokes about our Mishnah’s second case, where one began his term and it was interrupted by his son’s term: נטמא בימי בנו – If he became tamei during his son’s term, Rebbe Yochanan says: סותר – he forfeits even his own nezirus term and begins it anew, becauseחדא נזירות אריכתא היא – it is one long nezirus, i.e., his son’s term and his term (which was temporarily interrupted) are considered one term. Reish Lakish says: אינו סותר – He does not forfeit his own term (although he forfeits his son’s term), because נזירות דידיה לחוד ודבריה לחוד – his nezirus is distinct, and his son’s nezirus is distinct. This machlokes has another application: A nazir who becomes a metzora does not forfeit any prior days but cannot count days towards his nezirus until he is purified. נטמא בימי צרעתו – If he became tamei during his days of tzaraas, Rebbe Yochanan says he forfeits the days counted before his tzaraas, and Reish Lakish says he does not. The Gemara explains the novelty of each machlokes.

  • נטמא ביום גידול שער

A nazir who completes his term, but his hair had been cut during the past thirty days (either forcibly, or because of tzaraas), remains bound by all nazir prohibitions until he attains thirty days of hair growth.

The Gemara states: נטמא ביום גידול שער – If he became tamei on a day of hair growth, Rav says he does not forfeit his completed nezirus, even according to Rebbe Yochanan’s opinion in the previous cases: In those cases, he was within the term of an actual nezirus, but here, גידול שער מישלם נזירות הוא – the extra time for hair growth is merely a supplement to the nezirus. Shmuel says he does forfeit his nezirus, even according to Reish Lakish’s opinion in the previous cases: התם שתי נזירות – In those cases, there were two separate nezirus terms according to Reish Lakish’s view, whereas הכא חדא נזירותא – here it is one term of nezirus, so any tumah causes forfeiture of the entire term.
