Yisro - Shishi

(כ) וַיֵּ֧רֶד יְהֹוָ֛ה עַל־הַ֥ר סִינַ֖י אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר וַיִּקְרָ֨א יְהֹוָ֧ה לְמֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־רֹ֥אשׁ הָהָ֖ר וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (כא) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה רֵ֖ד הָעֵ֣ד בָּעָ֑ם פֶּן־יֶהֶרְס֤וּ אֶל־יְהֹוָה֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְנָפַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ רָֽב׃ (כב) וְגַ֧ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים הַנִּגָּשִׁ֥ים אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה יִתְקַדָּ֑שׁוּ פֶּן־יִפְרֹ֥ץ בָּהֶ֖ם יְהֹוָֽה׃ (כג) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל הָעָ֔ם לַעֲלֹ֖ת אֶל־הַ֣ר סִינָ֑י כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַעֵדֹ֤תָה בָּ֙נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (כד) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֤יו יְהֹוָה֙ לֶךְ־רֵ֔ד וְעָלִ֥יתָ אַתָּ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהָעָ֗ם אַל־יֶֽהֶרְס֛וּ לַעֲלֹ֥ת אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה פֶּן־יִפְרׇץ־בָּֽם׃ (כה) וַיֵּ֥רֶד מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ {ס}

(כ) וְאִתְגְלִי יְיָ עַל טוּרָא דְסִינַי לְרֵישׁ טוּרָא וּקְרָא יְיָ לְמשֶׁה לְרֵישׁ טוּרָא וּסְלִיק משֶׁה: (כא) וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה חוּת אַסְהֵיד בְּעַמָא דִילְמָא יְפַגְרוּן קֳדָם יְיָ לְמֶחֱזֵי וְיִפֵּל מִנְהוֹן סַגִי: (כב) וְאַף כָּהֲנַיָא דִקְרִיבִין לְשַׁמָשָׁא קֳדָם יְיָ יִתְקַדְשׁוּן דִילְמָא יִקְטוֹל בְּהוֹן יְיָ: (כג) וַאֲמַר משֶׁה קֳדָם יְיָ לָא יִכּוֹל עַמָא לְמִסַק לְטוּרָא דְסִינַי אֲרֵי אַתְּ אַסְהֵדְתָּ בָּנָא לְמֵימַר תַּחִים יָת טוּרָא וְקַדֵשְׁהִי: (כד) וַאֲמַר לֵהּ יְיָ אִזֵיל חוּת וְתִסַק אַתְּ וְאַהֲרֹן עִמָךְ וְכָהֲנַיָא וְעַמָא לָא יְפַגְרוּן לְמִסַק לִקֳדָם יְיָ דִילְמָא יִקְטוֹל בְּהוֹן: (כה) וּנְחַת משֶׁה לְעַמָא וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן

20. Hashem was revealed on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. Hashem called Moshe to the top of the mountain, and Moshe ascended. 21. Hashem said to Moshe, “Go down, charge the people lest they break through before Hashem to see, and many of them will fall. 22. And also the priests,[1] who draw near to serve before Hashem, must sanctify themselves, lest Hashem kill some of them.” 23. Moshe said before Hashem, “The people are unable to ascend Mount Sinai because You charged us, saying, ‘Set a border around the mountain and sanctify it.’” 24. Hashem said to him, “Go, descend and you ascend – you and Aharon with you. The priests and the people shall not break through to ascend before Hashem, lest He kill some of them.” 25. Moshe descended to the people and he spoke to them.

Chapter 20

(א) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֛ת כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹֽר׃ {ס}

(א) וּמַלִיל יְיָ יָת כָּל פִּתְגָמַיָא הָאִלֵין לְמֵימָר:

1. Hashem spoke all these words, saying:

(ב) אָֽנֹכִ֖י֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֣֥ית עֲבָדִ֑͏ֽים׃ (ג) לֹֽ֣א־יִהְיֶ֥͏ֽה־לְךָ֛֩ אֱלֹהִ֥֨ים אֲחֵרִ֖֜ים עַל־פָּנָֽ֗͏ַי׃ (ד) לֹֽ֣א־תַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה־לְךָ֥֣ פֶ֣֙סֶל֙ ׀ וְכׇל־תְּמוּנָ֔֡ה אֲשֶׁ֤֣ר בַּשָּׁמַ֣֙יִם֙ ׀ מִמַּ֔֡עַל וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר֩ בָּאָ֖֨רֶץ מִתָּ֑֜͏ַחַת וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּמַּ֖֣יִם ׀ מִתַּ֥֣חַת לָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃ )ה) לֹֽא־תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥֣ה לָהֶ֖ם֮ וְלֹ֣א תׇעׇבְדֵ֑ם֒ כִּ֣י אָֽנֹכִ֞י יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ אֵ֣ל קַנָּ֔א פֹּ֠קֵד עֲוֺ֨ן אָבֹ֧ת עַל־בָּנִ֛ים עַל־שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים וְעַל־רִבֵּעִ֖ים לְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃ )ו) וְעֹ֥֤שֶׂה חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ לַאֲלָפִ֑֔ים לְאֹהֲבַ֖י וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֺתָֽי׃ {ס}

(ב) אֲנָא יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ דִי אַפֵּיקְתָּךְ מֵאַרְעָא דְמִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עַבְדוּתָא: (ג) לָא יְהֵי לָךְ אֱלָהּ אָחֳרָן בַּר מִנִי: (ד) לָא תַעְבֵּד לָךְ צְלֵם וְכָל דְמוּת דִי בִשְׁמַיָא מִלְעֵלָא וְדִי בְאַרְעָא מִלְרָע וְדִי בְמַיָא מִלְרַע לְאַרְעָא: (ה) לָא תִסְגֻד לְהוֹן וְלָא תִפְלְחִנוּן אֲרֵי אֲנָא יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ אֵל קַנָא מַסְעַר חוֹבֵי אֲבָהָן עַל בְּנִין מָרָדִין עַל דַר תְּלִיתַי וְעַל דַר רְבִיעַי לְשָׂנְאָי כַּד מְשַׁלְמִין בְּנַיָא לְמֶחֱטֵי בָּתַר אֲבָהָתְהוֹן: (ו) וְעָבֵד טִיבוּ לְאַלְפֵי דָרִין לְרַחֲמַי וּלְנָטְרֵי פִקוֹדָי:

2. I am Hashem your God Who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.[2] 3. There shall not be to you another “god”[3] except for Me.[4] 4. Do not make for yourself an image[5] or any likeness that is in the heavens above, that is on the earth below, or that is in the waters under the earth. 5. Do not bow to them and do not serve them. For I, Hashem your God, am a zealous God, revisiting the sins of fathers upon rebellious children, on the third generation and on the fourth generation of those who hate Me when the children continue to sin in the manner of the fathers, 6. and performing kindness to thousands of generations of those who love Me and observe My commandments.

(ז) לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֛א אֶת־שֵֽׁם־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לַשָּׁ֑וְא כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יְנַקֶּה֙ יְהֹוָ֔ה אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־יִשָּׂ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ לַשָּֽׁוְא׃ {פ}

(ז) לָא תֵימֵי בִּשְׁמָא דַיְיָ אֱלָהָךְ לְמַגָנָא אֲרֵי לָא יִזַכֵּי יְיָ יָת דִיֵימֵי בִשְׁמֵהּ לְשִׁקְרָא:

7. Do not swear in the name of Hashem your God in vain, for Hashem will not acquit one who swears in His name falsely.[6]

)ח) זָכ֛וֹר֩ אֶת־י֥֨וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃ (ט) שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת יָמִ֣ים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ כׇּֿל־מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ (י) וְי֨וֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י שַׁבָּ֖֣ת ׀ לַיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ לֹֽ֣א־תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה כׇל־מְלָאכָ֜֡ה אַתָּ֣ה ׀ וּבִנְךָ֣͏ֽ־וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ׃ (יא) כִּ֣י שֵֽׁשֶׁת־יָמִים֩ עָשָׂ֨ה יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־הַיָּם֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖נַח בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י עַל־כֵּ֗ן בֵּרַ֧ךְ יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ {ס}

(ח) הֲוֵי דְכִיר יָת יוֹמָא דְשַׁבְּתָא לְקַדָשׁוּתֵהּ: (ט) שִׁתָּא יוֹמִין תִּפְלָח וְתַעְבֵּד כָּל עִבִדְתָּךְ: (י) וְיוֹמָא שְׁבִיעָאָה שַׁבְּתָא קֳדָם יְיָ אֱלָהָךְ לָא תַעְבֵּד כָּל עִבִדְתָּא אַתְּ וּבְרָךְ וּבְרַתָּךְ עַבְדָךְ וְאַמְתָךְ וּבְעִירָךְ וְגִיוֹרָךְ דִי בְקִרְוָךְ: (יא) אֲרֵי שִׁתָּא יוֹמִין עֲבַד יְיָ יָת שְׁמַיָא וְיָת אַרְעָא יָת יַמָא וְיָת כָּל דִי בְהוֹן וְנָח בְּיוֹמָא שְׁבִיעָאָה עַל כֵּן בָּרִיךְ יְיָ יָת יוֹמָא דְשַׁבְּתָא וְקַדְשֵׁהּ:

8. Continually remember the sabbath day to sanctify it. 9. Six days you shall work and perform all your labor, 10. and the seventh day is a sabbath before Hashem your God. Do not perform any labor – you, your son and daughter, your male and female servant, your animals and the convert who is in your city. 11. Because (in) six days Hashem made the heavens, the earth, the sea and all that is in them. He rested on the seventh day, therefore Hashem blessed the sabbath day and sanctified it.

(יב) כַּבֵּ֥ד אֶת־אָבִ֖יךָ וְאֶת־אִמֶּ֑ךָ לְמַ֙עַן֙ יַאֲרִכ֣וּן יָמֶ֔יךָ עַ֚ל הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ {ס}

(יב) יַקַר יָת אָבוּךְ וְיָת אִמָךְ בְּדִיל דְיוֹרְכוּן יוֹמָיךְ עַל אַרְעָא דַיְיָ אֱלָהָךְ יָהֵב לָךְ:

12. Honor your father and your mother so that your days will be lengthened on the land that Hashem your God gives to you.

(יג) לֹ֥֖א תִּֿרְצָ֖͏ֽח׃ {ס}             לֹ֣֖א תִּֿנְאָ֑͏ֽף׃ {ס}         לֹ֣֖א תִּֿגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ {ס}           לֹֽא־תַעֲנֶ֥ה בְרֵעֲךָ֖ עֵ֥ד שָֽׁקֶר׃ {ס}    

(יג) לָא תִקְטוֹל נְפָשׁ לָא תְגוּף לָא תִגְנוּב לָא תַסְהֵד בְּחַבְרָךְ סָהֲדוּתָא דְשִׁקְרָא:

13. Do not murder a soul.[7] Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not testify a false testimony against your fellow.

(יד) לֹ֥א תַחְמֹ֖ד בֵּ֣ית רֵעֶ֑ךָ {ס}             לֹֽא־תַחְמֹ֞ד אֵ֣שֶׁת רֵעֶ֗ךָ וְעַבְדּ֤וֹ וַאֲמָתוֹ֙ וְשׁוֹר֣וֹ וַחֲמֹר֔וֹ וְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְרֵעֶֽךָ׃ {פ}

(יד) לָא תַחְמֵד בֵּית חַבְרָךְ לָא תַחְמֵד אִתַּת חַבְרָךְ וְעַבְדֵהּ וְאַמְתֵהּ וְתוֹרֵהּ וַחֲמָרֵהּ וְכֹל דִי לְחַבְרָךְ:

14. Do not covet your neighbor’s house; do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox or his donkey, and everything that is your neighbor’s.

[1] At this point, the priests were the firstborn sons rather than Aharon and his sons.

[2] As opposed to “the house of slaves.”

[3] Onkelos changes the plural to singular.

[4] Rather than “in My presence.”

[5] Rather than “a graven image.”

[6] The Hebrew word “la-shav” might be understood as “in vain” or “falsely”; Onkelos translates one instance one way and the other instance the other.
