Chapter 17

(א) וַ֠יִּסְע֠וּ כׇּל־עֲדַ֨ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל מִמִּדְבַּר־סִ֛ין לְמַסְעֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־פִּ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ בִּרְפִידִ֔ים וְאֵ֥ין מַ֖יִם לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת הָעָֽם׃ (ב) וַיָּ֤רֶב הָעָם֙ עִם־מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ תְּנוּ־לָ֥נוּ מַ֖יִם וְנִשְׁתֶּ֑ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה מַה־תְּרִיבוּן֙ עִמָּדִ֔י מַה־תְּנַסּ֖וּן אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃ (ג) וַיִּצְמָ֨א שָׁ֤ם הָעָם֙ לַמַּ֔יִם וַיָּ֥לֶן הָעָ֖ם עַל־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לָ֤מָּה זֶּה֙ הֶעֱלִיתָ֣נוּ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָמִ֥ית אֹתִ֛י וְאֶת־בָּנַ֥י וְאֶת־מִקְנַ֖י בַּצָּמָֽא׃ (ד) וַיִּצְעַ֤ק מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֔ר מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה ע֥וֹד מְעַ֖ט וּסְקָלֻֽנִי׃ (ה) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה עֲבֹר֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם וְקַ֥ח אִתְּךָ֖ מִזִּקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּמַטְּךָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכִּ֤יתָ בּוֹ֙ אֶת־הַיְאֹ֔ר קַ֥ח בְּיָדְךָ֖ וְהָלָֽכְתָּ׃ (ו) הִנְנִ֣י עֹמֵד֩ לְפָנֶ֨יךָ שָּׁ֥ם ׀ עַֽל־הַצּוּר֮ בְּחֹרֵב֒ וְהִכִּ֣יתָ בַצּ֗וּר וְיָצְא֥וּ מִמֶּ֛נּוּ מַ֖יִם וְשָׁתָ֣ה הָעָ֑ם וַיַּ֤עַשׂ כֵּן֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה לְעֵינֵ֖י זִקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (ז) וַיִּקְרָא֙ שֵׁ֣ם הַמָּק֔וֹם מַסָּ֖ה וּמְרִיבָ֑ה עַל־רִ֣יב ׀ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וְעַ֨ל נַסֹּתָ֤ם אֶת־יְהֹוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הֲיֵ֧שׁ יְהֹוָ֛ה בְּקִרְבֵּ֖נוּ אִם־אָֽיִן׃ {פ}

(א) וּנְטָלוּ כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִמַדְבְּרָא דְסִין לְמַטְלָנֵיהוֹן עַל מֵימְרָא דַיְיָ וּשְׁרוֹ בִּרְפִידִים וְלֵית מַיָא לְמִשְׁתֵּי עַמָא: (ב) וּנְצָא עַמָא עִם משֶׁה וַאֲמָרוּ הָבוּ לָנָא מַיָא וְנִשְׁתֵּי וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן משֶׁה מָה אַתּוּן נָצָן עִמִי מָה מְנַסוּן אַתּוּן קֳדָם יְיָ: (ג) וּצְחִי תַמָן עַמָא לְמַיָא וְאִתְרַעַם עַמָא עַל משֶׁה וַאֲמַר לְמָא דְנַן אַסֶקְתָּנָא מִמִצְרַיִם לְקַטָלָא יָתִי וְיָת בְּנַי וְיָת בְּעִירַי בְּצָחוּתָא: (ד) וְצַלִי משֶׁה קֳדָם יְיָ לְמֵימַר מָא אֶעְבֵּד לְעַמָא הָדֵין עוֹד זְעֵיר פּוֹן וְיִרְגְמֻנָנִי: (ה) וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה עִבַּר קֳדָם עַמָא וּדְבַר עִמָךְ מִסָבֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְחֻטְרָךְ דִי מָחֵיתָא בֵהּ יָת נַהֲרָא סַב בִּידָךְ וְתֵיזִל: (ו) הָא אֲנָא קָאֵם קֳדָמָךְ תַּמָן עַל טִנָרָא בְּחוֹרֵב וְתִמְחֵי בְטִנָרָא וְיִפְּקוּן מִנֵהּ מַיָא וְיִשְׁתֵּי עַמָא וַעֲבַד כֵּן משֶׁה לְעֵינֵי סָבֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: (ז) וּקְרָא שְׁמָא דְאַתְרָא נִסֵיתָא וּמַצוּתָא עַל דִנְצוֹ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְעַל דְנַסִיאוּ קֳדָם יְיָ לְמֵימַר הֲאִית שְׁכִינְתָּא דַיְיָ בֵּינָנָא אִם לָא:

1. The entire congregation of the children of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin in their journeys by Hashem’s word. They camped at Refidim and there was no water for the people to drink. 2. The people argued with Moshe. They said, “Give us water and we will drink!” Moshe said to them, “Why[1] do you argue with me? Why are you testing before Hashem?” 3. The people thirsted there for water; the people complained against Moshe and said, “Why is this that you brought us up from Egypt to kill me, my children and my cattle with thirst?” 4. Moshe prayed before Hashem, saying, “What shall I do with this people? A little bit more and they will stone me!” 5. Hashem said to Moshe, “Pass before the people, and lead with you some of the elders of Israel. Take in your hand your staff, with which you struck the river, and go. 6. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Choreiv. Strike the rock and water will go out from it, and the people will drink.” Moshe did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel. 7. They called the name of the place “the test and the strife”[2] after the children of Israel arguing and after their tests before Hashem, saying, “Is Hashem’s presence in our midst or not?”

(ח) וַיָּבֹ֖א עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיִּלָּ֥חֶם עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּרְפִידִֽם׃ (ט) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֤ה אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ בְּחַר־לָ֣נוּ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְצֵ֖א הִלָּחֵ֣ם בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק מָחָ֗ר אָנֹכִ֤י נִצָּב֙ עַל־רֹ֣אשׁ הַגִּבְעָ֔ה וּמַטֵּ֥ה הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּיָדִֽי׃ (י) וַיַּ֣עַשׂ יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר אָֽמַר־לוֹ֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק וּמֹשֶׁה֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן וְח֔וּר עָל֖וּ רֹ֥אשׁ הַגִּבְעָֽה׃ (יא) וְהָיָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרִ֥ים מֹשֶׁ֛ה יָד֖וֹ וְגָבַ֣ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָנִ֛יחַ יָד֖וֹ וְגָבַ֥ר עֲמָלֵֽק׃ (יב) וִידֵ֤י מֹשֶׁה֙ כְּבֵדִ֔ים וַיִּקְחוּ־אֶ֛בֶן וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ תַחְתָּ֖יו וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב עָלֶ֑יהָ וְאַהֲרֹ֨ן וְח֜וּר תָּֽמְכ֣וּ בְיָדָ֗יו מִזֶּ֤ה אֶחָד֙ וּמִזֶּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ד וַיְהִ֥י יָדָ֛יו אֱמוּנָ֖ה עַד־בֹּ֥א הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ (יג) וַיַּחֲלֹ֧שׁ יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֥ק וְאֶת־עַמּ֖וֹ לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃ {פ}

(ח) וַאֲתָא עֲמָלֵק וַאֲגַח קְרָבָא עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּרְפִידִם: (ט) וַאֲמַר משֶׁה לִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בְּחַר לָנָא גֻבְרִין וּפוּק אֲגַח קְרָבָא בַּעֲמָלֵק מְחָר אֲנָא קָאֵם עַל רֵישׁ רָמָתָא וְחוּטְרָא דְאִתְעֲבִידוּ בֵהּ נִסִין מִן קֳדָם יְיָ בִּידִי: (י) וַעֲבַד יְהוֹשֻׁעַ כְּמָא דְאֲמַר לֵהּ משֶׁה לְאַגָחָא קְרָבָא בַּעֲמָלֵק וּמשֶׁה אַהֲרֹן וְחוּר סְלִיקוּ לְרֵישׁ רָמָתָא: (יא) וַהֲוָא כַּד מֵרִים משֶׁה יְדוֹהִי וּמִתְגַבְּרִין דְבֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל וְכַד מַנַח יְדוֹהִי וּמִתְגַבְּרִין דְבֵית עֲמָלֵק: (יב) וִידֵי משֶׁה יְקָרָן וּנְסִיבוּ אַבְנָא וְשַׁוִיאוּ תְחוֹתוֹהִי וִיתֵב עֲלַהּ וְאַהֲרֹן וְחוּר סַעְדָן בִּידוֹהִי מִכָּא חַד וּמִכָּא חַד וַהֲוָה יְדוֹהִי פְּרִיסָן בִּצְלוֹ עַד דְעַל שִׁמְשָׁא: (יג) וְתַבַּר יְהוֹשֻׁעַ יָת עֲמָלֵק וְיָת עַמֵהּ לְפִתְגָם דְחָרֶב:

8. Amalek came and battled against Israel in Refidim. 9. Moshe said to Yehoshua, “Choose men for us and go out and battle against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff through which miracles from Hashem were performed[3] in my hand.” 10. Yehoshua did as Moshe said to him, to battle against Amalek. Moshe, Aharon and Chur ascended the top of the hill. 11. It happened that when Moshe raised his hands, those of the house of Israel prevailed, and when he lowered his hands, those of the house of Amalek prevailed. 12. Moshe’s hands grew heavy. They took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aharon and Chur supported his hands, one on this side and one on this side. It happened that his hands were spread out in prayer until the sun set. 13. Yehoshua broke Amalek and his people of Amalek by the word of the sword.

(יד) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה כְּתֹ֨ב זֹ֤את זִכָּרוֹן֙ בַּסֵּ֔פֶר וְשִׂ֖ים בְּאׇזְנֵ֣י יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ כִּֽי־מָחֹ֤ה אֶמְחֶה֙ אֶת־זֵ֣כֶר עֲמָלֵ֔ק מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (טו) וַיִּ֥בֶן מֹשֶׁ֖ה מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יְהֹוָ֥ה ׀ נִסִּֽי׃ (טז) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כִּֽי־יָד֙ עַל־כֵּ֣ס יָ֔הּ מִלְחָמָ֥ה לַיהֹוָ֖ה בַּֽעֲמָלֵ֑ק מִדֹּ֖ר דֹּֽר׃ {פ}

(יד) וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמשֶׁה כְּתָב דָא דוּכְרָנָא בְּסִפְרָא וְשַׁוִי קֳדָם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אֲרֵי מִמְחָא אֶמְחֵי יָת דוּכְרָנָא דַעֲמָלֵק מִתְּחוֹת שְׁמַיָא: (טו) וּבְנָא משֶׁה מַדְבְּחָא וּפְלַח עֲלוֹהִי קֳדָם יְיָ דַעֲבַד לֵהּ נִסִין: (טז) וַאֲמַר בִּשְׁבוּעָה אֲמִירָא דָא מִן קֳדָם דְחֵילָא דִשְׁכִנְתֵּהּ עַל כָּרְסֵהּ יְקָרֵהּ דְעָתִיד דְיִתָּגַח קְרָבָא קֳדָם יְיָ בִּדְבֵית עֲמָלֵק לְשֵׁצָיוּתְהוֹן מִדָרֵי עָלְמָא:

14. Hashem said to Moshe, “Write this as a remembrance in the book and place it before Yehoshua[4] that I will utterly erase the memory of Amalek from under the heavens!” 15. Moshe built an altar and he served on it before Hashem, Who performed miracles for him.[5] 16. He said in an oath this statement from before awe of the One Whose presence is on the throne of glory, that he will battle the house of Amalek before Hashem, to destroy them from the generations of the world.[6]
