Korach - Sh'vi'i
Time and Tithes Wait For No Man
The Levites would also inherit no land, instead being supported in exchange for their services. They would receive the tithes (maaser), 10% of the people's produce. The Leviim would take a portion of the tithes they received and give it to the kohanim. (This is called terumas maaser, the priestly gift taken from a tithe. So an Israelite got 90% of the total crop, a Levite ended up with 9% and a kohein got 1%.) After giving this portion, the Levites could treat their tithes like regular food. They and their families could eat it anywhere.
