Chapter 1

(א) וְאֵ֗לֶּה שְׁמוֹת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַבָּאִ֖ים מִצְרָ֑יְמָה אֵ֣ת יַעֲקֹ֔ב אִ֥ישׁ וּבֵית֖וֹ בָּֽאוּ׃ (ב) רְאוּבֵ֣ן שִׁמְע֔וֹן לֵוִ֖י וִיהוּדָֽה׃ (ג) יִשָּׂשכָ֥ר זְבוּלֻ֖ן וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ (ד) דָּ֥ן וְנַפְתָּלִ֖י גָּ֥ד וְאָשֵֽׁר׃ (ה) וַֽיְהִ֗י כׇּל־נֶ֛פֶשׁ יֹצְאֵ֥י יֶֽרֶךְ־יַעֲקֹ֖ב שִׁבְעִ֣ים נָ֑פֶשׁ וְיוֹסֵ֖ף הָיָ֥ה בְמִצְרָֽיִם׃ (ו) וַיָּ֤מׇת יוֹסֵף֙ וְכׇל־אֶחָ֔יו וְכֹ֖ל הַדּ֥וֹר הַהֽוּא׃ (ז) וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל פָּר֧וּ וַֽיִּשְׁרְצ֛וּ וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ אֹתָֽם׃ {פ}

(א) וְאִלֵין שְׁמָהַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל דְעַלוּ לְמִצְרָיִם עִם יַעֲקֹב גְבַר וֶאֱנַשׁ בֵּיתֵהּ עַלוּ: (ב) רְאוּבֵן שִׁמְעוֹן לֵוִי וִיהוּדָה: (ג) יִשָּׂשׂכָר זְבוּלֻן וּבִנְיָמִין: (ד) דָן וְנַפְתָּלִי גָד וְאָשֵׁר: (ה) וַהֲוָה כָּל נַפְשָׁתָא נַפְקֵי יַרְכָּא דְיַעֲקֹב שַׁבְעִין נַפְשָׁן וְיוֹסֵף דַהֲוָה בְּמִצְרָיִם: (ו) וּמִית יוֹסֵף וְכָל אַחוֹהִי וְכֹל דָרָא הַהוּא: (ז) וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נְפִישׁוּ וְאִתְיַלָדוּ וּסְגִיאוּ וּתְקִיפוּ לַחֲדָא לַחֲדָא וְאִתְמְלִיאַת אַרְעָא מִנְהוֹן:

1. These are the names of the sons of Yisroel who came in[1] to Egypt with Yaakov, each came in with the people of his household: 2. Reuven, Shimon, Levi and Yehuda, 3. Yisachar, Zevulun and Binyamin, 4. Dan and Naftali, Gad and Asher. 5. All the soul(s) who issued from Yaakov’s thigh were 70 souls[2] and Yoseif who was in Egypt. 6. Yoseif died, and all his brothers, and that entire generation. 7. The children of Israel were prolific and increased.[3] They multiplied and became exceedingly mighty, and the land was filled with them.

(ח) וַיָּ֥קׇם מֶֽלֶךְ־חָדָ֖שׁ עַל־מִצְרָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יָדַ֖ע אֶת־יוֹסֵֽף׃ (ט) וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֶל־עַמּ֑וֹ הִנֵּ֗ה עַ֚ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רַ֥ב וְעָצ֖וּם מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (י) הָ֥בָה נִֽתְחַכְּמָ֖ה ל֑וֹ פֶּן־יִרְבֶּ֗ה וְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־תִקְרֶ֤אנָה מִלְחָמָה֙ וְנוֹסַ֤ף גַּם־הוּא֙ עַל־שֹׂ֣נְאֵ֔ינוּ וְנִלְחַם־בָּ֖נוּ וְעָלָ֥ה מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (יא) וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ עָלָיו֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מִסִּ֔ים לְמַ֥עַן עַנֹּת֖וֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם וַיִּ֜בֶן עָרֵ֤י מִסְכְּנוֹת֙ לְפַרְעֹ֔ה אֶת־פִּתֹ֖ם וְאֶת־רַעַמְסֵֽס׃ (יב) וְכַאֲשֶׁר֙ יְעַנּ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ כֵּ֥ן יִרְבֶּ֖ה וְכֵ֣ן יִפְרֹ֑ץ וַיָּקֻ֕צוּ מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (יג) וַיַּעֲבִ֧דוּ מִצְרַ֛יִם אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ (יד) וַיְמָרְר֨וּ אֶת־חַיֵּיהֶ֜ם בַּעֲבֹדָ֣ה קָשָׁ֗ה בְּחֹ֙מֶר֙ וּבִלְבֵנִ֔ים וּבְכׇל־עֲבֹדָ֖ה בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה אֵ֚ת כׇּל־עֲבֹ֣דָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־עָבְד֥וּ בָהֶ֖ם בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ (טו) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֨ר שֵׁ֤ם הָֽאַחַת֙ שִׁפְרָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פּוּעָֽה׃ (טז) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙ אֶת־הָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹת וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן עַל־הָאׇבְנָ֑יִם אִם־בֵּ֥ן הוּא֙ וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן אֹת֔וֹ וְאִם־בַּ֥ת הִ֖וא וָחָֽיָה׃ (יז) וַתִּירֶ֤אןָ הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְלֹ֣א עָשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ן מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרָ֑יִם וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ אֶת־הַיְלָדִֽים׃

(ח) וְקָם מַלְכָּא חַדְתָּא עַל מִצְרָיִם דְלָא מְקַיֵם גְזֵרַת יוֹסֵף: (ט) וַאֲמַר לְעַמֵהּ הָא עַמָא בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל סָגָן וְתַקִיפִין מִנָנָא: (י) הָבוּ נִתְחַכַּם לְהוֹן דִלְמָא יִסְגוּן וִיהֵי אֲרֵי יְעַרְעִנָנָא קְרָב וְיִתּוֹסְפוּן אַף אִנוּן עַל סַנְאָנָא וִיגִיחוּן בָּנָא קְרָב וְיִסְקוּן מִן אַרְעָא: (יא) וּמַנִיאוּ עֲלֵיהוֹן שִׁלְטוֹנִין מַבְאִישִׁין בְּדִיל לְעַנוֹאֵהוֹן בְּפָלְחָנְהוֹן וּבְנוֹ קִרְוֵי בֵית אוֹצָרָא לְפַרְעֹה יָת פִּיתוֹם וְיָת רַעַמְסֵס: (יב) וּכְמָא דִמְעַנַן לְהוֹן כֵּן סָגָן וְכֵן תַּקְפִין וַעֲקַת לְמִצְרָאֵי מִן קֳדָם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל: (יג) וְאַפְלָחוּ מִצְרָאֵי יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקַשְׁיוּ: (יד) וְאַמְרָרוּ יָת חַיֵיהוֹן בְּפָלְחָנָא קָשְׁיָא בְּטִינָא וּבְלִבְנִין וּבְכָל פָּלְחָנָא בְּחַקְלָא יָת כָּל פָּלְחָנְהוֹן דְאַפְלָחוּ בְהוֹן בְּקַשְׁיוּ: (טו) וַאֲמַר מַלְכָּא דְמִצְרַיִם לְחַיָתָא יְהוּדַיָתָא דְשׁוּם חָדָא שִׁפְרָה וְשּׁוּם תִּנְיֵתָא פּוּעָה: (טז) וַאֲמַר כַּד תֶּהֶוְיָן מוֹלְדָן יָת יְהוּדַיָתָא וְתֶחְזְיָן עַל מַתְבְּרָא אִם בַּר הוּא תִּקְטְלַן יָתֵהּ וְאִם בְּרַתָּא הִיא ותְקַיְמִנַהּ: (יז) וּדְחִילָא חַיָתָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ וְלָא עֲבָדָא כְּמָא דְמַלִיל עִמְהֶן מַלְכָּא דְמִצְרָיִם וְקַיָמָא יָת בְּנַיָא:

8. A new king, who didn’t enforce Yoseif’s decrees, arose over Egypt. 9. He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too numerous and mighty for us. 10. Let us deal shrewdly with them,[4] lest they may increase and it will be when war occurs, they will also join our enemies. They will fight against us and go up from the land.” 11. They set evil taskmasters over them to oppress them with their labors;[5] they built treasure houses[6] for Pharaoh: Pisom and Raamses. 12. As they were oppressed, so they increased and so they grew mighty. The Egyptians were afraid because of the children of Israel. 13. The Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel with harsh (labor). 14. They embittered their lives with the hard labor – with mortar and bricks and all the labor in the field – all their labors that they made them perform, harsh (labor). 15. The king of Egypt spoke to the Jewish[7] midwives, one of whom was named Shifa and the second of whom was named Puah. 16. He said, “When you deliver the Jewish women and you look at the birthstool, if it’s a boy, kill him. If it’s a girl, let her live.” 17. The midwives feared[8] from before Hashem and didn’t do as the king of Egypt had said to them; they let the boys live.
