2,732. Using Local Terms in a Vow

In some places, people don’t speak clearly and they mispronounce words, resulting in different names for things. In such places, we go by the local terms. All the words that are used for an offering are the same as if one had used the word korban. Therefore, if one declares produce to be to him like konam, konach or konaz, it’s all the same as saying korban. Similarly, cheirek, cheiref and cheirech are the same as saying cheirem. The same is true in all similar cases, i.e., we follow the terminology commonly used by people in a given place and time.

Just like one can make a vow prohibiting something to himself by using local terminology, one can likewise consecrate something with such words. Slang terms for such words, however, are ineffective for vows – both those of prohibition and those for consecrating property.
