Kilayim 4:5-6

Kilayim 4:5

Beis Shammai say that a row of five vines counts as a vineyard but Beis Hillel say a vineyard must have at least two rows of three vines each. Therefore, if one plants vegetables within four cubits (about six feet) of a vineyard, Beis Shammai say he renders one row prohibited and Beis Hillel say two rows.

Kilayim 4:6

If a person plants two vines opposite two vines and there’s a fifth vine extending in one of the rows that isn’t opposite a corresponding vine, it qualifies as a vineyard. If that fifth vine is outside the two rows or between them, it is not a vineyard. It is only a vineyard if it is in a row and extends like a tail. (See diagram below.)
