Shoes made of wool and felt may not be worn until they have been checked for shaatnez. Rabbi Yosi says that those that come from coastal towns and overseas need not be checked because they are most likely made from hemp. We do not suspect wool-lined shoes of presenting a shaatnez problem.

Kilayim 9:8

Shaatnez only applies to garments that have been spun or woven. The word “shaatnez” (ShTNZ) stands for shua (combed), tavui (spun) and nuz (twisted – this represents the stages of producing thread). Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says NZ stands for “naloz u’meiliz” – “he creates an abomination and distances himself (from G-d).”
