Kesubos 5:6-7
Kesubos 5:6
If a man vowed to abstain from sexual relations with his wife, Beis Shammai say she gives him two weeks to annul the vow; Beis Hillel say one week. (If he does not annul the vow, he must divorce her and pay her the value of the kesubah.) Students who go to study Torah in another city without their wives’ consent have 30 days; laborers can go work in another city for one week. The Torah requires men to perform their conjugal duties as follows: men of leisure, daily; laborers, twice weekly; mule drivers, weekly; camel drivers, every 30 days; sailors, every six months. This reflects the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer.
Kesubos 5:7
If a woman refuses her husband marital intimacy, the value of her kesubah is reduced by seven dinar each week; Rabbi Yehuda says by seven tarpikin (one tarpik = half a dinar). The value of the kesubah is decreased until nothing is left (at which point, he must divorce her). Rabbi Yosi says he need not divorce her and he continues decreasing even after the value of the kesubah is used up because the possibility always exists that she will receive an inheritance and he could collect from that. If a man refuses his wife marital intimacy, the value of her kesubah is increased by three dinar each week; Rabbi Yehuda says by three tarpikin.
