Kesubos 11:1-2

Kesubos 11:1

A widow is supported from the property of the orphans (i.e., the deceased’s children), in exchange for which they receive her handiwork. They are not responsible to bury her; her own heirs, who collect the value of her kesubah, are responsible for that.

Kesubos 11:2

If a woman is widowed, whether following betrothal or marriage, she may sell property from her husband’s estate without requiring the court’s permission. Rabbi Shimon says that a widow from marriage may sell without the court’s permission but a widow from betrothal may only sell with the court’s permission because she is not entitled to support from the estate. One who does not receive support may only sell with the court’s permission.
