Nedarim 7:4-5

Nedarim 7:4

If a person takes a vow prohibiting a house to himself, Rabbi Meir says that he is allowed to use the loft but the Sages say the loft is included in the house. If he takes a vow prohibiting the loft to himself, he is allowed to use the house.

Nedarim 7:5

If a person takes a vow prohibiting beds to himself, Rabbi Meir says that he is allowed to use a futon[1] but the Sages say a futon is included in beds. If he takes a vow prohibiting futons to himself, he is allowed to use a bed. If a person takes a vow prohibiting the city to himself, he is permitted to enter within the city’s Shabbos boundary but he may not enter its outskirts (where there are some outlying buildings). If one takes a vow prohibiting a house to himself, that is measured from the door frame and in.

[1] Editor’s note: I have selected the word “futon” to describe a quasi-bed. See Talmud Nedarim 56a-b for a fuller discussion of the meaning of the Mishna’s word “dargash.”
