Kesubos - Daf 65

  • אין פוסקין יינות לאשה

The Gemara notes that the Mishnah listing the various foods that a husband is chayav to provide his wife, does not include any mention of wine. This omission supports Rebbe Elazar’s ruling, who said: אין פוסקין יינות לאשה – We do not give a stipend of wines to a woman. Rebbe Yehudah of Kfar Neviraya, and others say it was Rebbe Yehudah of Kfar Nefor Chayil, said: From where do we derive that we do not award a stipend of wines to a woman? For it is stated in the passuk: "ותקם חנה אחרי אכלה בשלה ואחרי שתה" – And Channah got up after she ate in Shiloh and after he drank. "שתה" ולא שתת – after he drank, which implies she did not drink. The Gemara clarifies that the derashah is based on the fact that the passuk was dealing with Channah’s eating, and then changed to discuss Elimelech’s drinking. We learn from here that he drank but she did not drink. The Gemara brings a Baraisa later on that taught: כוס אחד יפה לאשה שנים ניוול הוא שלשה תובעת בפה ארבעה אפילו חמור תובעת בשוק ואינה מקפדת – One cup of wine is good for a woman. Two is a disgrace. After three cups, she verbally requests marital relations from her husband. If she drinks four cups, she solicits even a donkey in the marketplace and is not particular. Rava said that they taught this Baraisa only with regard to a woman whose husband is not with her.

  • Providing a wife shoes on the regalim

The Mishnah on Daf 64b stated: ונותן לה כפה לראשה וחגור למתניה – And he gives her a kerchief for her head and a belt for her waist, ומנעלים ממועד למועד וכלים של חמשים זוז משנה לשנה – and shoes from festival to festival, and clothes worth fifty zuz from year to year. Rav Pappa said to Abaye: “Is this Tanna stripped naked and wearing shoes”? Rashi explains that he is asking if it makes sense that it is more important to provide her with shoes at each festival and she only gets new clothing once a year. Abaye said to him: תנא במקום הרים קאי – The Tanna lived in a mountainous area, where one needs three pairs of shoes a year. And he is informing us incidentally that he should give them to her on the regalim, so that she should have simchah with them.

  • ואוכלת עמו מלילי שבת ללילי שבת

The Mishnah stated: נותן לה מעה כסף לצורכה ואוכלת עמו מלילי שבת ללילי שבת – He gives her each week a silver ma’ah for her needs, and she eats with him every Friday night. The Gemara asks what the meaning is of “she eats with him,” and Rav Nachman says: אוכלת ממש – It literally means eating, whereas Rav Ashi says: תשמיש it refers to marital relations. The Gemara challenges Rav Ashi’s explanation from a Baraisa which taught: Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: אוכלת עמו בלילי שבת ושבת – she eats with him on Friday night and on Shabbos day. Now it is understandable if the term “she eats” refers to actual eating, for then it means she eats with him on Shabbos day. But according to Rav Ashi, who holds it means having marital relations, are there marital relations on Shabbos day? Why Rav Huna said: ישראל קדושים הן ואין משמשין מטותיהן ביום –Yisroel are holy and they do not engage in marital relations during the day! The Gemara answers that Rava said: בבית אפל מותר – In a dark house, marital relations during the day are permitted.
