Kiddushin 1:4-5
Kiddushin 1:4
A large animal (like a cow) is acquired by transferring it (such as by handing the new owner its reins) and a small animal (like a sheep) is acquired by lifting it; this is the opinion of Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Elazar. The Sages say that a small animal is acquired by pulling it.
Kiddushin 1:5
Real estate is acquired with money, a document or precedent (chazakah, e.g., by enclosing and working the land). Movable goods are only acquired through transference. Movable goods may be acquired along with real estate through money, a document or precedent; movable goods can impose the requirement to take an oath on real estate (which is not normally the case in court cases involving real estate).
