Kesubos - Daf 7

  • Sheva berachos are recited for one day when an alman and almanah marry

The Gemara brings contradictory statements from Rav Huna whether sheva berachos are recited when an almanah gets married and suggests that he holds sheva berachos are recited when a bochur is marrying an almanah and are not recited when an אלמן - a widower marries an almanah. The Gemara objects that sheva berachos are not required in that case, for Rav Nachman said that Huna bar Nassan told him that a Baraisa taught: מנין לברכת חתנים בעשרה – From where do we know that sheva berachos are only recited when there are ten men present? For the passuk states describing the marriage of Boaz and Rus, "ויקח עשרה אנשים מזקני העיר ויאמר שבו פה וישבו" – He took ten men from the elders of the city, and he said, “Sit here,” and they sat. Now Boaz was an almana widower, as Rashi explains, Boaz was the judge Ivtzan who had thirty sons and thirty daughters. We see from here that sheva berachos are recited when a alman and almanah marry!? The Gemara answers that when Rav Huna said that when an almanah marries an alman she does not require sheva berachos, he meant אינה טעונה ברכה כל שבעה אבל יום אחד טעונה ברכה – she does not require sheva berachos for all seven days, but she does require sheva berachos for the first day.

  •  ברכת הארוסין מאי מברך

The Gemara asks: ברכת הארוסין מאי מברך – What does one recite for the berachah of erusin? Ravin bar Rav Adda and Rabbah bar Rav Adda both said in the name of Rav Yehudah; Boruch Attah Hashem…אשר קדשנו במצתיו וצונו על העריות – Who has sanctified us with His mitzvos and commanded us regarding arayos, ואסר לנו את הארוסות – Who forbade arusos to us, והתיר לנו את הנשואות על ידי חופה וקדושין – and permitted us to those women who are nesuos through chuppah and kiddushin. Rav Acha brei d’Rava concluded it in the name of Rav Yehudah, as follows: Boruch Attah Hashem, מקדש ישראל על ידי חופה וקדושין – who sanctifies Yisroel through chuppah and kiddushin. The Gemara explains that those who hold that there is no need for a concluding berachah, hold that the berachah is like a berachah on fruit and a mitzvah, and those who do require the concluding berachah, hold it is similar to kiddush, since it speaks of kedushah.

  • פנים חדשות

It was taught in a Baraisa: מברכין ברכת חתנים בעשרה כל שבעה – We recite sheva berachos in the presence of ten men all seven days. Rav Yehudah said: והוא שבאו פנים חדשות – This is provided that new faces come to the meal. Rashi defines panim chadashos as those who were not there the previous day.
