2,536. The Definition of Perforated

Hilchos Shechita 6:1

“Perforated” is as follows: there are 11 organs in which a perforation of the even the smallest size that reaches the animal’s body cavity renders it a treifa. These are the entrance to the esophagus, the membrane of the brain, the heart including the large arteries, the gall bladder, the arteries that travel to the liver, the four stomachs (i.e., the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum and the abomasum), the intestines, and the lungs with the bronchia.

Hilchos Shechita 6:2

We already defined the entrance to the esophagus. This is a place above the esophagus that is unfit for shechita. A perforation there of even the slightest size that reaches the animal’s body cavity renders it a treifa.
