2,532. The Mauling of Birds

Hilchos Shechita 5:5

If a hawk attacks, mauling applies even to a large bird; when it comes to other birds of prey, mauling only applies to birds their own size and not to birds that are larger than they are.

Hilchos Shechita 5:6

Mauling applies when a weasel attacks a bird; it doesn’t apply when a dog attacks a bird, or a domesticated or wild animal. It does apply when a hawk attacks a kid or a lamb in a case where the claws penetrate the animal’s body cavity.
