Every animal is considered prohibited in its lifetime until we know for surely that it was properly slaughtered.

Hilchos Shechita 1:14

Shechita can be performed with anything: a metal knife, flint, glass, the edges of bullrushes, or anything else that cuts so long as the edge is sharp and free of defects. If there’s a groove at the edge of the implement of slaughter, even if it’s very small, the shechita is invalid.
