2,486. If an Animal Stuck Its Neck Out
Hilchos Shechita 1:7
The place of slaughter vis-a-vis the trachea is from where its “hat” (the cartilage at the top) slants down until the start of the lung’s “wing” when the animal stretch out its neck to graze. The area on the outside opposite this is the neck.
Hilchos Shechita 1:8
If an animal exerted and stuck its neck out extra far, or the shochet exerted and extended the signs upward but he still slaughtered on the neck in the place of slaughter, there is a doubt as to if the animal is a neveila because the esophagus and the trachea weren’t cut in the usual spot.
