2,447. Who Tastes Other Mixtures?
Maachalos Assuros 15:30
If a mixture includes meat and milk, or wine that was poured as a libation or that was made from orlah or mixed species of a vineyard that fell into honey, or the meat from vermin or creeping things that were cooked with vegetables, etc., then a non-Jew should taste the mixture and we accept his word. If he tells us that it doesn’t have the taste of the prohibited thing or that it imparted a negative taste that impairs the flavor of the permitted thing, then the entire mixture is permitted so long as the prohibited thing won’t ultimately enhance it. If there’s no non-Jew available to taste it, we rely on the ratios of 60, 100, and 200 times the volume of the prohibited item.
Maachalos Assuros 15:31
If a mouse falls into beer or vinegar, we require a ratio of 60 times its volume because we are concerned that it might have imparted its taste to the beverage and enhanced it. If it falls into wine, oil or honey, it remains permitted even if it imparted taste because that would impair the flavor. That’s because these things all rely on their pleasant aromas, which are ruined by the rodent, impairing their flavors.
