Kiddush Followed by Soda
Q. I recited Kiddush on wine and plan to have a drink of soda immediately afterwards. Must I recite another beracha?
A. Shulchan Aruch (OC 174:2) writes that if one is drinking wine, the beracha of Hagafen covers all other drinks as well. Tosfos explains that other drinks are considered tafel (secondary) to wine. Just like the beracha of Hamotzi exempts all foods eaten during the meal, so too the beracha on wine exempts all drinks. There is a disagreement among poskim whether the other drinks must be in front of the person on the table when reciting the beracha on wine (Taz), or whether it is enough to have them in mind (Shulchan Aruch Harav). The Mishnah Berurah (174:3) writes that lechatchila the drinks should be on the table, but if not and one had them in mind, we may rely on the lenient opinion. However, if the drinks were not on the table and he did not have them in mind until after drinking the wine, a new beracha must be recited on the other drinks. Furthermore, the Mishnah Berurah writes that the beracha on the wine covers other drinks only if one drank malei lugmov (a cheekful of wine which is approximately 1.7 oz) or more. If one made Kiddush or listened to Kiddush but drank less than a cheekful of wine, it is questionable whether a new beracha must be made on the other drinks. If this occurs, one should listen to a friend recite Shehakol, or recite Shehakol on another food (such as a sugar cube).
