Wine After Kiddush

Q. I recited Kiddush on wine and would like to continue drinking wine during the meal. Must I make a new beracha, or was it covered by the beracha recited before the meal?

A. Shulchan Aruch (OC 174:3) writes that the beracha on the Kiddush wine covers all wine that one drinks during the meal; however, it is questionable if the wine of Havdalah will cover wine that one drinks afterwards during Melaveh Malka (unless one washed netilas yadayim before reciting Havdalah). The Mishnah Berurah (174:8) explains that since Kiddush is connected to the meal (Kiddush must be said in the place where one will eat), it covers any wine that will be served at the meal. Havdalah, on the other hand, is not connected to Melaveh Malka, and therefore it is questionable whether it covers wine that one will drink during the meal, since the purpose of the wine was for a mitzvah and not as a preparation for the meal. Even regarding Kiddush, the Mishnah Berurah writes that the wine of Kiddush will only cover the wine that you drink during the meal if you are accustomed to drinking wine during the meal. For those who do not regularly do so, they should recite a new beracha if they decide to drink wine.
