Avos 4:22-5:1
Avos 4:22
Rabbi Eliezer HaKapar used to say that everyone who is born is destined to die. Those who die are destined to be revived and the living are destined to be judged. Man’s purpose is to know and to publicize so that it will be known that God is the Almighty Creator, Who formed the world, knows all our deeds, and decides our fates. He testifies as to our deeds, brings us to trial and judges us. He possesses no unrighteousness, forgetfulness or favoritism, and He can’t be bribed because everything is already His. All of our deeds will be added up in our accounting. Don’t be tricked into thinking that that the grave will protect us because we were created and born without giving consent, we live without giving consent, we die without giving consent, and we will have to account for ourselves before God without giving consent.
Avos 5:1
The world was created through ten statements. What does the Torah teach us through this, seeing that God could have created the world with one statement? This is in order to punish evil-doers, who destroy the world that was created through ten statements, and to give a better reward to the righteous, who preserve the world that was created through ten statements.
