Avos 5:20-21

Avos 5:20

Yehuda ben Teima said to be as bold as a leopard, as light as an eagle, as swift as a deer and as powerful as lion to perform God’s will. He used to say that the brazen are bound for Gehinnom and the bashful are for bound for Gan Eden. May it be Your will, Hashem, that Your city be rebuilt quickly in our days and grant us a portion in Your Torah! [It appears that this may once have represented the end of the tractate with subsequent mishnayos being added later. Alternately, Yehuda ben Teima may be requesting Divine assistance in walking the fine line between being bold and brazen.]

Avos 5:21

[Shmuel HaKatan] used to say that age of five is the time to start learning the Written Torah, age 10 for learning Mishna. At 13, a boy becomes obligated in mitzvos, at 15 he starts learning Gemara, and he should marry at 18. At 20, he should undertake a career. 30 is the age of vigor, 40 is the age of understanding, 50 is the age at which one has enough life experience to give others counsel. At 60, one is an elder; 70 is old age; one who reaches 80 has strength; at 90, one is bent; at 100, one’s quality of life is such that it is as if he had already died and departed from the world.
