Zevachim 4:1-2

Zevachim 4:1

Beis Shammai say that for any sacrifice whose blood must be sprinkled on the outer altar, if one sprinkled once, he has effected atonement (b’dieved – after the fact); in the case of a sin offering, he only effects atonement if he sprinkles twice. Beis Hillel say that one also effects atonement if he sprinkles once in the case of a sin offering. Therefore, if one sprinkles a single time properly and he sprinkles a second intending to eat or burn the sacrifice after the appropriate time, he has effected atonement. If one sprinkles the first time intending to eat or burn the sacrifice after the proper time and the second time intending to eat or burn the sacrifice outside of the proper place, it is piggul and he incurs kareis (spiritual excision) because of it.

Zevachim 4:2

For any sacrifice whose blood must be sprinkled on the inner altar, if any sprinkling is omitted, atonement is not effected. Therefore, if one performed all the sprinklings properly except for one that had improper intentions, then the sacrifice is invalid but one does not incur kareis because of it.
