2,307. A Neveila

Maachalos Assuros 4:1

One who eats an olive-sized piece of a domesticated or wild animal or bird that died is liable to lashes, as per Deuteronomy 14:21, “Do not eat any neveila.” Any animal that wasn’t slaughtered in the proper manner is considered like it died. The details of ritual slaughter will be covered IY”H in Hilchos Shechitah.

Maachalos Assuros 4:2

Only animals of kosher species are prohibited as neveila because these are the species that are fit for ritual slaughter and which may be eaten if slaughtered properly. If one eats from a non-kosher species, to which ritual slaughter is inapplicable, it makes no difference whether they were slaughtered properly, died on their own, or one cut meat from a living animal and ate it. In all of these cases, one isn’t lashed for eating a neveila or a treifa, just for eating the meat of a non-kosher species.
