2,293. Eating a Creature in Its Entirety

Maachalos Assuros 2:21

Throughout this chapter, when we speak of eating an olive-sized portion, it means that one ate an olive-sized piece of a large creature or that one gathered a little from one species and a little from another species in the same category until he has eaten an olive-sized amount. However, if one eats a prohibited creature in its entirety, then one is liable to lashes under Biblical law even if it's smaller than a mustard seed; this is true regardless of whether one ate it dead or alive. It’s even true if the creature rotted beyond recognition since he ate it in its entirety.

Maachalos Assuros 2:22

If an ant is missing even one of its legs, a person isn’t liable to lashes for eating it unless he eats an olive-sized volume. Because of these rules, one who eats a fly or a mosquito in its entirety – whether alive or dead – is lashed for eating a swarming thing that flies.
