2,282. Signs That Will Grow In Later

Maachalos Assuros 1:23

If a locust doesn’t have wings or extended legs, or if its wings don’t cover the greater part of its body, but it will grow these later when it gets larger, it is permitted to be eaten now, before it grows them.

Maachalos Assuros 1:24

The two signs of kosher fish are fins and scales. Fins are what the fish use to swim and scales are the things that coat the whole body of a fish. Any fish that has scales also fins. If a fish doesn’t have these things now but it will when it grows, or if it has scales in the sea but it sheds them when removed from the water, it may be eaten. If a fish doesn’t have scales that cover its whole body, it may be eaten; this is true even if it only has one fin and one scale.
