2,277. The List of Non-Kosher Birds

Maachalos Assuros 1:13

An animal that comes from crossbreeding a kosher domesticated animal with a kosher wild animal is called a koy. Its fat is prohibited but one isn’t lashed for eating it and its blood must be covered. A non-kosher animal can’t be impregnated by a kosher animal.

Maachalos Assuros 1:14

The signs of kosher birds aren’t explicit in the Torah. Rather, the Torah lists the non-kosher species and the rest are kosher. There are 24 prohibited species of bird. (Once again, we cannot positively identify all of the species listed so we will refrain from giving what could be taken as an exhaustive list. Examples of non-kosher birds include eagles, ospreys, kites, vultures, ravens, ostriches, falcons, owls, cormorants, storks, pelicans, herons, swans and bats. Yes, the bat is a mammal but the Torah’s classification is based on flight, not on having feathers and laying eggs.)
